If you haven’t had a chance to check out Janice Hardy’s Fiction University (Take Your Writing to the Next Level) – do so. She makes my schedule look lackadaisical. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday she has writing articles with nearly 3000 articles in the archives. Tuesday and Thursday she gets guest authors. Saturday, she does real life diagnostics and Sunday has prompts and tips.

In January, John Hartness dropped by and share his “The Long Con: Ten Things You Need to Know About Going to Conventions as a  Writer” which is how I found out about her excellent writing blog.

What is in Mr. Hartness’ article I haven’t covered already?

  1. There are a lot of different types of conventions out there
  2. Make friends, and cut expenses
  3. Yes, you have to take credit cards (if you have a table selling books)
  4. You gotta have some swag
  5. Flat Stock is the Devil

To find out the rest, you need to go to the site, but let’s look at the “Flat Stock” point.

I’ve totally never told you how to set up a table for a convention, because I’ve never had a table. But I have done art displays for craft shows. Going up is good. People don’t look at things below their eyeline. How many times have you watched people run over small kids? About half of humanity is used to kneebiters running around and try to observe things at that level – those types of people usually don’t have much in the way of disposable income. You want the people with money, people who constantly look at adult level – that means going up.
