Flash: Prepping a Meal

“Are you sure?” I ask a final time as the electric Lotus hissed into a parking space, waving my hand at the neon lights of the chosen restaurant. “Italian?”

My vampire date. Well, more like client, smirked as he opened the winged doors with a push of a button. “My only weakness for garlic is how much I enjoy it. Your bio did say you loved pizza.”

Climbing out of the long-slung vehicle without showing too much skin ending up being impossible, and Justin’s dark eyes blackened further. I forcefully suppressed the shiver rolling through my belly and along my spine, refusing to consider if it was fear or anticipation.

“Oh, I do.” I moved smoothly through the doors to the pizzeria. “Do you have any particular type in mind?”

“Not pineapple,” he said looking down, at my eyes, along the hair wisps escaped from my bun and playing over my exposed neck, and stopped deep inside my generous cleavage. “Please tell me you drink wine.”

“Of course.” I glance at the approaching waitress and bite back the rest of the statement. He knows I have a two-drink limit per the contract.

We are shown to a small table with a red and white checkerboard tablecloth. I glance over the menu, as he orders two glasses of red wine and antipasto platter from the hostess. She hustles the initial order to the kitchen; I saw her pricing his tailored suit and earrings, and knew she already calculated the tip for our table, because been-there-did-that for years. The new gig pays better than any of my previous jobs but carries bigger risks.

“I was thinking an appetizer, medium pizza, and some of almond cannolis for dessert. Or is that too much?”

I smile back, carefully keeping my teeth covered, just like Justin has been doing. The vampire culture only shows teeth for flirting and fighting, and isn’t that good at distinguishing between the two. “Not at all. Whatever you want.” I glide my fingers along his hand, tilting my head to the side, feeling the curls snake along the blue veins. His eyes fixate on my neck for a moment.

“Excellent. Too many women these day worry about their weight.”

“Well,” I shrug, my cleavage dragging his eyes down. “I let other people watch my weight and so far I’ve had no complaints.”

The wine arrived with the antipasto. I may have spoke too soon; the platter filled half the table. He places the order for the rest of my meal when the server asks if there is anything else. I sip the wine while waiting, watching him follow the swallows. Once we are back to our relatively private space, I unwrap my fork and wave it over the platter. “Where do you want me to start?”

“The olives.”

“Green or black?”

“The black, and, if you could, tell me what they taste like?”

The meal goes on. I tell him about the food, describing it in detail. Though he was a new client, most biters hunger for the commentary on food they can no longer have. In return, he tells me about memories related to the food. Places where it is grown, people he has known. I manage to tuck away the entire antipasto platter, the medium-sized house supreme pizza, and the six almond-creamed stuff cannolis. Justin exchanged our glasses a couple times during the meal so it looked like he was drinking as well.

Well fed, and comfortable with the alcohol, I let him guide me out of the restaurant with a hand about my waist. He still was old school enough he used cash to pay for everything, including the tip. I did my own tip calculations in my head based on that. I love old-school biters, they have had so much time to build their fortunes and they believe you get what you pay for.

Geeking Science: History of Puddings

“Now bring us some figgy pudding”
“Hurrah for the fun, is the pudding done!”
“Georgy Porgy, pudding pie”
So many songs about pudding, you would think it is a central dish to holiday season. Which it was throughout history until mixed foods, associated with mixed immigrants, became verboten in the white-bread vanilla-paste backlash from the USA melting pot.
Pudding now-a-days is a single flavor not-liquid not-solid dessert – chocolate, rice, vanilla, etc. Banana pudding – with banana chunks, Nilla wafers, and whipped topping on top is closest to the concept of old puddings. A mix of everything. Christmas fruitcakes are close to the sweet puddings of Christmas – moist and full of all kinds of things.
The savory puddings have been removed by history. (But would be really cool to bring back in a science fiction or history fiction piece.) Meat puddings, vegetable puddings, bag puddings, etc.
Find out more about the history of this gastrological missing link by exploring the below posts and articles … maybe even experiment with a few dishes for Geeking Science.

Flash: Living Scents

“Gods, I love pumpkin spice coffee.”

“And people run so much faster during October after all their summer exercise.” Jerri, the other ghost haunting the park passed me some of the pumpkin cookies and snickerdoodles she was scarfing down, still laughing about the people we chased off. “They forget how quickly it gets full dark after all those months of sun.”

Cinnamon has the best memories, with nutmeg is a close second. Coffee though, that is life. Permeating every part of my heart-attack destined existence. I felt nearly solid at our jump-scare bounty.

Flash: Pizza and Movie Night Part 2

From the Internet Hive Mind

This appeared as a prompt for a Facebook writing group I’m part of – aim is 50 words, I went a little over. The instruction was include in your flash display(s) of affection which are not overtly sexual. I returned to my pizza couple, one of whom is asexual, both of whom motivated by food and entertainment. They were created in response to the meme asking, “well, what motivations exist other than sex?”

The last of the zombies fell apart sideways under Jae’s machete, transforming into a pile of gelatin-like goo and stark-white bones. Unlike last month’s zombie apocalypse, these bodies will not be going back to their resting places. No one would be identifying shit.

They shook off their blade while I considered my shotgun. I ran out of cartridges over an hour ago and had switched to bashing. I really needed to carry more ammo, replacing guns cut into my anime budget.

“Behind.” Jae whispered before wrapping their arms around me, leaning their head on my shoulder. With one hand they pushed down the mangled gun, and with the other they had their cell phone positioned so we could both see it. We had heard the all-clear song a lifetime ago, or maybe it was six minutes ago, according to the text time log.

They thumbed through the message giving details about what the Alpha mage team had accomplished, and what cleanup and fallout could be expected.

“You smell.” I whispered, nudging my head against their ear.

“Not all of us kill at a distance, hon.”

“Hey, does that say Gamma team nine is not assigned to cleanup until tomorrow?”

Jae purred against my shoulder. “Pizza and movie night back on?”

“I’m not looking forward to going into the shadow places and pulling out any gooey remains into sunlight for final disintegration, but I do believe our pizza and movie night is back on.” I stared down the street. We never made it to Pizza Guy and Fries; two cemeteries in route gummed up the works. But we stayed between the ground upchucking zombies and our favorite pizza place, so they should still be in business. “Let me check on Buster and his crew and place our order. You go home and shower and pick the movie.”

“Pizza and movie night!” Jae belly flops on the sofa beside me.

I nod happily, reaching for my phone to order when it buzzes with an incoming text and then an emergency alert. I’m afraid to look but swipe it out of habit.

*Zombie apocalypse*

I show it to Jae.

“Nooooo,” they moan rolling over to reach for their ever-present machete, “It was pizza night.”

“Maybe we can end it quick?” I said hopefully, walking over to where we store the sawed off shotguns.

“Let’s head to Pizza Guy and Fries first and make sure they are okay.”

Few things were more important to Jae than pizza, and if I was honest, me too, so I planned out the route in my head.
