Taking medicine or having surgery can be problematic for women. Pain impacts healing, hormones cycles react with immunity building from vaccinations, life cycle changes alter heart health. AND NONE OF IT HAS BEEN STUDIED!!! Not really.

Because it is “too complicated”.

Half of humanity, and the differences everyone says exists between men and women medically, have never been really studied. 

Testing of drugs, longitudinal studies of human health, EVEN ANIMAL TESTING. Male subjects only need apply.

“For much of documented history, women have been excluded from medical and science knowledge production, so essentially we’ve ended up with a healthcare system, among other things in society, that has been made by men for men,” Dr Kate Young, a public health researcher at Monash University in Australia

Want to test diets? The 1982 Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial, seeing if dietary change and exercise can prevent heart disease – only men subjects, all 13,000 participants were male.

And why animal testing on only male subjects? Well, the female subjects just added too much extra data to track. Too much complication.

Never mind over half of humanity taking the drugs after they are through going through the (male only) animal trials and (male only) human trials are female. It’s too much work. And the few times they do include women, they forget to break out the gender separate.

Is it any wonder the drugs are not as effective?

We need to do better.

Editing Rant: Gonna Leave a Bruise

Wound healing process XXL. Painful bruise of elbow shot during three weeks.

Okay, I’ve reached my limit with this particular nonsense.
BRUISES DO NOT FORM IMMEDIATELY!!!!
We’ve all gone and said at one point or other, “that is going to leave a bruise” – but do you see purple and blue the first day??? – NO!!!
Why do authors have characters in books start bruising immediately? Big blue and purple monstrosities. Same-day black eyes. Bruised knuckles. Black and blue on the spine after being thrown on the floor.
Even if you are a superhero with a quick healing factor, the damage will be not purple and blue, as those colors are CHEMICAL REACTIONS, not your body healing.
Fun Fact – It takes one to two days for the hemoglobin in the blood to change to bluish-purple and/or black. After 5 to 10 days, the bruise will get the green/yellow tint. Initial damage is pink, red, and white. (White where swelling in high.)

Geeking Science: That Corny DNA

Nine thousand years ago someone on this side of the pond decided that some wild grass looked tasty. Tasty enough to plant in a controlled manner. Again, and again, and again. For generations.
They passed this plant from what is now southwestern Mexico to neighbors north and south of them. Various paths crossed and recrossed during the domestication process. Now DNA is being used to unlock the convoluted history.
Historic DNA isn’t easy to work with. DNA starts breaking down once the living thing that the sequence programmed is no longer living. If you like puzzles, DNA assembly for history might be for you. Using data from 30 sources, scientists got three which could be sequenced after two years work.
Why I am Geeking about this is the DNA being used to trace lineage. Looking at plants gives us insight into land-use and trading. As more and more DNA is added to the historic databases, we can trace diseases (plants and humans), trade across continents, and climate changes.

Geeking Science: 3D Printed Skin

3D printing promises many changes which will restructure entire industries, none more promising than the medical field. Already 3D printing is making prothesis for children possible in ways never before, including quick adjustments for growth, different prothesis for different activities, and all the colors and pattern to make it “cool”.

Actual medical replacement of body parts with living tissue have moved more slowly. 3D tissue printing, using a patient’s DNA, is a medical holy grail – no rejection! No lifetime of drugs and suppressed immunity! The challenge is developing the software for printing the parts and creating the “ink” from DNA to print the parts.

Printing of organs – like hearts, lungs, livers, and other highly needed transplants – require scaffolding and the uniqueness of each individual “space” for the organs. Each of these is a one-off and means life-or-death for a person. Internal organs will always require highly skill technical assistance in creation and insertion so long as technology is creating the organs outside the body.

Two products, not as specialized as organs but which are constantly required, would revolutionize the Emergency Room if 3d printing tech machines because as easy to hook up and use as an IV line.

Blood and Skin.

Most Americans understand the constant shortage of blood.

Skin is just as needed. For burn and abrasion events. To seal holes from violence and accidents to prevent infection. To heal scars. To replace skin after skin cancer surgery. To fix gingivitis.

Printing skin for burn victims works about as well as the bandages we have right now.

The problem is skin isn’t JUST skin. It has blood vessels. To bond the printed-skin to the body, it needs to be connected to the network of blood and other fluids.

Recently scientists have figured out how to leave a tunnel in the printed-skin which, when attached to a living system, will be converted into blood vessels.

One step closer to every ER having a machine where the techs and nurses just scrape back the damage, dump bio-waste in the machine to use the DNA base, and print the new skin on the body. Burns over half the leg will become an overnight observation to make sure the bond is complete, and the person is sent home. Scraped arms from a fall down the mountain, sealed with the printed-skin  to prevent infection and healed without scars. Dental surgery to cover gingivitis clefts will no longer have to steal skin from other places in the mouth, making two injuries, but instead will be a quick scrap – come back in three days – and fix the gums.

Oh, and once mouth “skin” is mastered – replacement teeth will be possible too. (Did you know that teeth are skin, not bone?) Imagine, no more root canals with fake teeth replacements – but whole and healthy teeth!

Geeking Science: Poisons

The assassin smiled as she watched the target drink the poison. Any moment now the victim would keel over … any moment.
Or not.
Depends on the poison. Poison isn’t a simple roll d20 for a fail or save. Some poisons require build up over time. Others are skin contact, not ingestion. Some just make you sick, other destroy organs, causing not just a slow death, but an agonizing one.
I recently read an article from Dan Koboldt who likes to put “Science in Sci-Fi, Fact in Fantasy”: “Poisons in SSF“, published April 21, 2016 – he interviewed a toxicology specialist for his posting.
Tropes touched on:
1. All poisons do is kill. (the reproductive toxicity is scary in the non-killing versions of poisons)
2. Poisons work when you eat and drink them.
