Comments I wrote during a buddy read of The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook Book 3

Page 0 – I love trains. This one is going to be fun.

Page 58 – Of course glitter. Oh, I hope he does a glitter bomb.

Page 64 – Carl always about sharing intel.

Page 84 – If the countdown doesn’t get you, the death of individuals will.

Page 85 – Poor Vernon. He deserved better than fire ants.

Page 94 – Earning the Queasy Rebuff SUCKED.

Page 133 – Oh no, not Donut. They were trying so hard to be skull-free.

Page 318 – The build-up to Katia becoming a cow-catch scoop has been happening throughout the whole book. I’ve written stuff like this where I go, “damn everything led to this and I didn’t even know it” and other times I discover the solution and have to back track and put all the parts into the story. The McGyvering solution is really pretty (the combination of momentum bonuses, weight addition, and skill-set to build the non-human shape). I wonder if this is one of the ones where “I want to reach this point, what do I need to write to get there” or if it was “Okay, I have reached this problem, how do I solve it with what I got.”

Page 334 – Hekla, “I made a mistake. We need a pause and a reset.”
This WITCH is using her psyche degree to control everyone.
“oops, I got caught, so everyone else needs to calm down and let me take control back”

Page 407 – Okay, the ability to stick out your tongue and give the middle finger at the same time rocks.

Page 429 – Now the question, based on the propaganda bent of the presentations, is just how psycho is Lucia Mar, really?

Page 430 – The Burton Corporation should thank Carl for using chat so often. Monetizing the curiosity of those who must know what is happening in there should help with their debt.

Page 433 – I love the deadpan of this: “We are purchasing a personal space upgrade,” Mordecai said, “A cleaner bot.” … Katia wordlessly paid for it , and we marched back into the personal space.

Page 444 – It takes a team to figure out the puzzle of level four – (1) art; (2) history; (3) problem-solver.

Page 503 – This is such a party-line. Loita is little better than press-secretary-Barbie: “Yes,” Loita said. “We are putting tighter controls on the information crawlers are being fed through these interviews in an attempt to make the crawl more equitable toward those who aren’t privileged enough to get a view of the world outside the dungeon.”

Page 521 – Overall, not as fun as the previous two, I think because of the long-setup for the train puzzle payoff. Other opinions?

Comments I wrote during a buddy read of CARL’S DOOMSDAY SCENARIO

Page 17 – Sasquatch – BIG FOOT
Ha-ha-ha-ha. You can practically feel the AI looming over Carl’s shoulder whispering “do it.”

Page 21 – The minute Mordecai finished describing the Primal race, I was like “Carl is clicking that”. He LOVES using the history and background of the culture against them.

Page 22 – Going back and relooking over the Primal stats
“All higher-tier skills are unlocked” – oh, that is…wow.
Maybe he can’t use them yet, but no extra work to get at them? No quests or achievements needed? Yeah, that is an amazing plus.

Page 25 – Last time humanity was at 700,000 was in the 1700s.

Page 53 – DICTIONARY TIME
Scutelliphily – Looking it up in the dictionary, the closest things are like the study of scales. Is this a lover of fish scales and skin flakes and reptile scales. Interesting, could be creepy.
Cesta Punta – Not in the dictionary. Punta … that is something Spanish, meaning chicken? or is it cat? Oh, well, that will wait until I am at a computer (see more details at page 117)

Page 97 – Getting sucked into a substory when you need to grind because you chose a prep-based class is going to suck. Fifteen hours asleep is a hurt.

Page 104 – Oh shit, a boss battle without his team. And a crazy elite looking over his shoulder.
Carl!

Page 110 – That … that was not how I thought a boss battle would go.
Are all the neighborhood boss battles going to be completely tragic? Because 😭😭😭

Page 116 – Normally when authors hide information from the readers, I find it to be a cheat. Like mysteries where the detective holds back one clue that they noticed at the beginning and they never shared with the reader until the big reveal.

Here, though, Carl is actively hiding stuff from the audience, and since the reader is partially part of the audience, some of the stuff going on in his head isn’t shared.  But as a reader, we get to see the text messages, which opens up some of the hidden factor as well as the off screen time. So it is like getting a VIP pass. The layers to this!

And the hiding a lot of the conversation with Odette at the very beginning, including choosing something to get a “Manager” by having the conversation between books is just BRILLIANT. And you can’t blame them for the hiding, because they really have to hide it from Mordecai.

Anyway, jamming the new book.

page 117 – At the computer now, let’s look up these words
Scutelliphily – patch collecting – collecting of patches and badges. Hmm. So achievements, maybe? Also coat-of-arms like law enforcement and military patches. Could be interesting. I would use it to collect girl and boy scouts.
scutelliphily, from Latin scutellus meaning little shield, and Greek phileein meaning to love) – Little shields, ah, I see the link to the study of fish/reptile scale.

Cesta Punta skill – Okay, Punta is an insult like whore … is it like Feet Whore – or someone who gives foot massages by walking on people’s backs? I totally see the AI sending that skill-set Carl’s way.

From the Dungeon Crawler Carl wiki –  Jai alai is a sport involving bouncing a ball off a walled-in space by accelerating it to high speeds with a hand-held wicker, commonly referred to as a cesta. The game, whose name means “merry festival” in Basque, is called cesta-punta (“basket tip”) in the Basque Country. The sport is played worldwide, but especially in Spain, France, the U.S. state of Florida, and in various Latin American countries.

Punta means tip … which is the whore insult. But also has a real use.

Throwing a ball with a launching device, and he is having trouble launching the smoke grenades to the locations he wants during the circus battles with his sling. Oh, this is a NICE! (Still would have like the back massages by walking on people.)

And thinking just a little more on the Scut hobby – a Princess collecting badges/coat-of-arms. That also could be very interesting.

Page 122 – You will not break me. You will not break me.

Page 125 – The differences between the normal Dungeon-Crawling, the small side scripts written into the game, and the outside scripted shows is making me think. I’m trying to match it up with the pre-bought D&D campaigns, the D&D world books, and the home-grown stories.

Page 131 – “both dramas” … is someone else having a time of it elsewhere?
I hate it when two good shows are opposite each other.

Page 132 – ZEV: Don’t worry about that. It’s official. I have the power to sign on your behalf.

CARL: That’s terrifying, Zev.

Page 177 – The DM really wants to run the mini-episode they wrote with GumGum.
Dudes, be a little more subtle about getting your players back on track. No one wants to be railroaded into a story. That is just poor writing. (Additional comment after finishing the book – Those *&% wanted that ending.)

Page 198 – Flying disembodied female heads with their guts and lungs below them, plus bodies with little blood. Oh, I KNOW these monsters. I wrote a campaign with them once. It’s a great legend!

Page 201 – First hobby just kicked in!
Plus the Hob lobby lobbers will soon activate the second hobby, for hobby lobbing (thank you, NOT, for that pun Matt). I just know it. And with the hobby of lobbing, the Hob lobby lobbers will get a place in legend.

Page 265 –  …now this great deceiver, this devourer of all that is holy, has a name. She is Donut the Oak Fell. The Death upon Us All. She Who Ends.

Page 282 – A new teammate with Katia (Mongo and Mordecai already being dragged along). Upto 5. That’s a good team. And she has PATHFINDING! (of course, Monster Truck Drivers would have that skill).

Page 312 – My original plan was to have Donut stay outside while I went in solo. She absolutely refused.

“You promised me that I wouldn’t die alone,” she said. “You can’t keep this promise if you die before me. ..
😭😭😭

Page 319 – Watching Remex tumble through the storylines – which of those tangents were real-life, which were programmed from other versions? How many storylines has Remex lived through?

Page 323 – Themes: Trees – oaks, planting, seeds, growth

Page 351 – What.an.ending. Not exactly a cliffhanger in that this story is complete. But, wow.

Page 360 – Finished – More layers the lasagna! This feels so real world because of all the different ways things are going.
1. People from Earth interacting
2. The game they are in (with the AI) and general rules
2.5 Each level has its own rules and some mixing storylines – so you need to know this level AND prep for future levels.
3. Additional people writing stories with unrelated stories which may be part of the game
4. Deciding on points and powers for paying the game
5. Interacting with the audience – shows, prizes, playing to the audience with actions and quests
6. Interacting with the companies – show writers, the Borant (can’t speak ill of the bosses)
7. Individuals watching – assassination!
8. Companies interacting with each other – debts, long history, ongoing agreements
9. Government interacting with the game.
10. Natural doing its thing – Night/day. Water.
11. Personal growth and decisions
12. Friendships different from alliances
13. Survival of body
14. Survival of self.

Etc. Just amazing

Page 360 – I am NOT playing chess with Matt.

Page 360 – Final thoughts (maybe)
1. Carl’s Doomesday Scenario is still in inventory. o_O !!!
2. While Odette might want Carl and Donut higher on the leaderboard for personal $$$, the lower they are the better. I wonder who is manipulating the board (likely many) and why (many goals).

Page 360 (next day)

Thinking about Remex being a tenner and Mordecai’s talking about offers to get of the crawler starting at level ten (he recommended staying until level eleven because the offers get better, if you survive). Anyway, I see Borant really pushing to get Princess Donut off at level 10 – because then they get residuals for whenever she gets used going forward of all the people who are her fans – like when Remex was used in the storyline, the viewership SOARED.

Then with Carl alone – Mongo and Donut gone- (and not offering him anything), they can get rid of the Problem Child Primal in a SPECIAL WAY. Great viewership. Plus then Princess Donut will forever be a Tragic Figure. But I don’t know if Borant understands just how much the AI “likes” Carl (‘s feet).

Thoughts?

Comments I wrote during a buddy read of DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL

Page 2 – I’ve just read a lot of books in a row without the author having a good grasp on humor. I have high hopes of breaking that streak.

Page 79 – So is it the AI with the foot fetish or one of the dungeon creators? I really don’t see it being the producers – on the other hand, maybe fish have an unsettling attraction to feet like some people have to fins (mermaid & shark erotica)?  – The ending acknowledgments included “The perverts who send me concerning feet pictures.” I want to ask if anyone here has a foot fetish, but I really don’t want to know. As an ongoing joke, I hope there is a lot of variation on it. Usually jokes like this get tired because it keep repeating the same thing and have a cruel edge after a while (like “your mom” jokes), but so far it has been entertaining.

Page 97 – “Do you hear music?” — oh, no! that is NEVER good. Not in movies and definitely not in video games.

Pages 99-102 – (Not me, but one of my buddies on the read translated the Spanish of the Hoarder for the group. (CRYING!!!))

Page 118 – I am loving the onging patches because of the early release. (One of my jobs working for a programming group years ago was tracking the patches, making sure we were meeting contracted changes appropriately.)

Page 175 – Poor Imani. Not sure you can get over that.

Page 175 – I think (the Waffle House) is one of the most powerful moments in the first book.  We can’t run, we are being a burden on others, and WE.ARE.NOT.ENTERTAINMENT.

Page 180 – “Are you saying if someone else comes, they might kill all the old people? Just to get experience? Oh, Carl, darling. Nobody is quite that evil.” Donut paused. “Are they?”
(When a cat has more moral empathy than humans…)

Page 225 – Stayed up late last night (past 3 am) to get to the end of the level. I’m afraid of what the count will be next part. The drop each check-in is so dark, especially when counting from 8 billion. This is the amount of us-earth-humans-and-related left. The extinction countdown.

Page 225 – Three o’clock in the morning is making for a rough day. But the promise of humor is coming through. Worried about the promise (in the acknowledgments) of it getting darker in later books – this one has a line of dark.

Page 225 – Donut has her TV time!!!!

Page 260 – “More people had made it down to the next level than I expected.”
ALSO ON THE PAGE “Six days and counting.”
And previously never made it lower than 13 level of 18 required to “win”.
They rig the game for tension, but not success. They have to have the appearance of winning but don’t want to lose the profit.

Page 273 – One of my buddies wrote “I cannot read “a 5% chance to immediately kill you” without thinking “ah yes, rolled a 1.””

Page 350 – SPOILER: Great use of a feature of the game. I didn’t think they would survive the Rage demon – but everything was amazing about it.

Page 386 – “Effective immediately, any NON-SAPIENT mobs who happen upon a stairwell will not be disintegrated.”
… You know, I don’t think this is going to go the way the way they think.

Page 390 – Background politics – wow, this is EXTREMELY well-done. We’ve been getting hints dropped throughout and now we have a much more solid view of both the rushing to the end (get access to the money) but making sure a LOT of money is generated. Most of the times I’ve seen the background information be dropped on characters in other groups – of the background political mechanisms and it is like – oh, so that is how the world words – but with Carl it is, hmm, let’s put this into the toolbox, we might need it. And then he breaks it out and uses it whenever he can. Just amazing writing – this is what I called layered-writing – and Mr. Dinniman is so far down in the layers it is pure baklava.

Page 403 – “Time to pay the Daddy tax.” … Ah, so it is the AI, not one of the programmers.

Page 427 – Oh goodness that book is evil. Two nights up to three am. Normally I get tired after about an hour of embroidery and an hour of reading (no blue screen time) and head to bed. The reading is – nice story but slight break in action, what time is it? Ok, bedtime (one hour has passed). But with Dungeon Crawler Carl – how long have I been reading? – two hours, but it is good, just going to finish off this scene. Two hours after that… – The series is at seven books, well, the 7th book (and level 9 – which the ending parts of this book indicates is off the hook) comes out in September.

Page 457 – Amazing on so many writing skills – the McGyvering problem creation and problem solving, the world, the characters, the humor mixed with the dark, the drama. Yes, very plot driven, but somehow the agency keeps coming into play. Five stars!

Book Review (SERIES): Dungeon Crawler Carl (books 1-3)

My book club introduced me to a new series. I had been hearing about the Dungeon Crawler Carl series for a while; I’ve even been to a convention where Matt Dinniman was in attendance. While I have enjoyed LitRPG in the past, it isn’t that fascinating to me to watch characters level up through statistics. I prefer to read characters growing and expanding their skills and emotions through other means than the mechanisms of LitRPG. But when the group choose to read it, I was like “okay, it is popular and I should be reading stuff that is changing genres.” Little did I know what a game-changer Dungeon Crawler Carl is. The darkly humorous fantasy series has so many levels to it, a properly made baklava might be jealous.

I love this series. I hate that it doesn’t let me sleep when I pick one up from the library, because these books don’t get put down easily. And each books gets longer, making it real hard to read them in a day, let alone one sitting.

This review covers books one through three.  I am reading the hardback editions which include the Backstage of the Pineapple Cabaret. All books are being read in hardback through the library. While paper version is not required, you likely will want to flip back and forth to check things out.

Bonus, my book club recently started using the Storygraph Buddy-Read option. I will publish the comments I made while reading this series in a special blog tomorrow.

Dungeon Crawler Carl Series

Book 4: The Gate of the Feral Gods (level 5 – 608 pages)

Book 6: The Eye of the Bedlam Bride (level 8 – 832 pages)

The apocalypse will be televised!

You know what’s worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what’s worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That’s what.

Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that’s actually the set of a reality television show with countless viewers across the galaxy. Exploding goblins. Magical potions. Deadly, drug-dealing llamas. This ain’t your ordinary game show.

Welcome, Crawler. Welcome to the Dungeon. Survival is optional. Keeping the viewers entertained is not.

MY REVIEW for DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL

Oh, goodness the lack of sleep this book gives – pure evil. This is amazing on so many writing skills – the McGyvering problem creation and problem solving, the world, the characters, the humor mixed with the dark, the drama. Yes, very plot driven, but somehow the agency keeps coming into play.

Background politics of those running the game – wow, this is EXTREMELY well-done. Dropped throughout in very small piecemeal bits (not infodumps) – from the planetary to the corporations, from debt to history. The horrific mix of rushing the game (from the early start) to pay off debt, but making sure a LOT of money is generated. Most of the times I’ve seen the background information be dropped on characters in other books (background political mechanisms and it is like, both in fantasy and science fiction, especially military sci-fi), it’s all “oh, so that is how the world works” for both me the reader and for the POV character, but with Carl it is, hmm, let’s put this into the toolbox, we might need it. And then he breaks it out and uses it whenever he can. Just amazing writing – this is what I called layered-writing – and Mr. Dinniman is so far down in the layers it is pure Baklava.

I adore the McGyvering, and Mongo, and Princess Donut (long may her tiara shine). Every character has goals and hopes – which is horrendous against the countdown from 8 billion to 12 million to … every tick of Earth-humanity going towards extinction. This book is at once hilarious and horrific; funny and freaky. I hope Carl doesn’t break.

If you are into (1) dungeons and dragons; (2) science fiction or fantasy; (3) Mcgyver-like problem-solving; (4) human vs. dehumanizing; (5) storytelling; (6) reality shows; (7) talk shows; (8) cats … this book is for you.

BOOK BLURB ON AMAZON for CARL’S DOOMSDAY SCENARIO

“The training levels have concluded. Now the games may truly begin.”

The ratings and views are off the chart. The fans just can’t get enough. The dungeon gets more dangerous each day. But in a grinder designed to chew up and spit out crawlers by the millions, Carl and Princess Donut need to work harder than ever just to survive.

They call it the Over City. A sprawling, once-thriving metropolis devastated by a mysterious calamity. But these streets are far from abandoned. An undead circus trawls the ruins. Murdered prostitutes rain from the sky. An ancient spell is finally ready to reveal its dark purpose.

Carl still has no pants.

They call it Dungeon Crawler World. For Carl and Donut, it’s anything but a game.

MY REVIEW for CARL’S DOOMSDAY SCENARIO

I am doling this series out slowly, like once a month. Not because I don’t want to eat these up like candy, but because they CONSUME me while I read them, staying up way too late and not getting other needed tasks done.

They have more layers than lasagna. I stopped counting the layers to world-building and characters at fourteen (!!!). The complex world can be enjoyed at the top-level dark-humor action-flick adventure as a quick read.

But thinking about it, even a little is worth it.

Dig in and level up.

I recommend reading this series in order. And now to sleep and then catch up with the rest of life.

BOOK BLURB ON AMAZON for THE DUNGEON ANARCHIST’S COOKBOOK

Welcome to the Gun Show!

The top ten list is populated. The sponsorship program is open. The difficulty is ramping up. The first three floors were nothing compared to what Carl and Donut now face.

The Iron Tangle. An impossibly-complicated subway system built out of the world’s subterranean railway systems, all combined and then tied together into a knot. Up is down. Down is up. Close is far. The cars are filled with monsters, the railway stations are less than safe, and the exit is always just a few stops away.

But there is hope. For the first time, the crawlers are all working together. The loot is better than ever. And the secret to unraveling it all may be hidden in the pages of a seemingly-useless book. Welcome, crawlers. Welcome to the fourth floor of the dungeon.

MY REVIEW for THE DUNGEON ANARCHIST’S COOKBOOK

It takes a while for this book to gel; thank goodness Mr. Dinniman had two beyond-incredible books before this one so I was willing to give him the rope to either hang himself or pull me along for the ride, because what a ride this ends up being!

I adore trains, so I went into this with high hopes but the first third of the book is about setting up the puzzle to level four, getting all the pieces in play. Like learning a subway and public transportation system. The second third is getting the solution pieces on the table, like gathering the token, locations, and perfect combination of friends for the most Epic.Night.Out.Ever. The final third delivers on the setup, leaving one at their destination bruised, battered, exhausted, wondering “dude, where is my car”, and euphoric to have survived the ride.

Not as funny as the previous parts of the series, I wouldn’t recommend starting with this one, but the McGyvering and puzzle-solving might be the best yet. The characters continue to evolve, from Donut to the “throw-away” side characters, gaining maturity and horror.

This darkly funny series is some of the best worldbuilding and character creation out there.
