Geeking Science: Bystander Effect

I’ve set up a lot of tents in my day. Nearly all in existence take more than one person for the poles. I’ll like to think I would have popped up quickly and helped, but in the video people had also been assigned a task and I always attempt to complete my personal tasks before helping others. I mean, they assigned me a task for a reason.

One of my science loves is sociology, how groups of people interact. Knowing about the bystander effect gives a person the ability to avoid it within themselves and work around it in other circumstances.

CPR classes teaches the participants to point to individual bystanders in an emergency and give them tasks; untrained people don’t know how they can help but when asked to do a simple task, will jump on it.

WRITING EXERCISE: Have something happen with a large group of people present, it doesn’t need to be an emergency. Choose one person from the group; how long does it take for the person to stop being a bystander and what is the tipping point?

Inheritance

Everyone was home for Thanksgiving. Grandma making deliciousness in the kitchen with mom, my two sisters, and a cousin who worked in a restaurant relegated to making the gravy. Dad and the rest of the gang snacked, watching the game after the quick touch football game in the backyard ended up being a leaf fight. Twenty-three people in all, fifteen staying overnight, made a very crowded house.

Perfect.

I love my family.

Even Zelda’s two rescue greyhounds which she refuses to board. To grandma pets are family too, so Oil Slick and Leaping Lance shared floor space with the crawler and the two toddlers while grandma’s Princess and Sir Claws-a-lot, Santa for short, laid across the back of the sofa to avoid the tail pullers. Frozen Kitty wasn’t a fan of large groups and hid back in the guest room with Evan, helping the boy read the most recent Lunar book.

I had stolen a chair from the two tables set up yesterday and stuck it between the sofa and recliner to watch the game. My boyfriend leaned on the back. I mean, not my boyfriend, we are roomies, not romantic. He is a friend, who is a boy, and had no one to eat thanksgiving dinner with since his family lives in Florida. When I told grandma, well, you can guess what she said. We both are on the biology track, working towards pre-med research, and the apartment is right next to the Nibset Lab. God, I don’t know how many times I repeated that explanation this weekend. It’s still better than him staying at the apartment staring at the empty walls for the four-day break. Yes, we have pictures, we just haven’t put in the nails between TA, lab work, and classes, so they lean on the walls at floor level where we plan to put them up. Maybe next year.

So Malik bent down a bit to whisper in my ear, “When dinner?” like six million dozen deviled eggs, a vegetable platter, and four types of chips weren’t on the coffee table in front of us.

“Four.”

“Okay.” He stood straight a moment and then leaned back down. “Anything I can do?” tickled my ear.

Not a fan of football I guess. Actually, I know. Basketball he could tolerate, but any other sport bored the crap out of him. For me I watch football one day a year, well, three – Thanksgiving, New Year’s, and the Superbowl – because of school. I played until high school, when the boys got too big for me to tackle. I still miss being a defensive end.

I turned my head to the side to whisper back at him, lips skimming across his shaved cheek. “Do you want to brave the kitchen?”

He snorted, pulling his head back a little to speak against my neck. “How about set the table?”

“Hm. Aunt Judith usually does that.”

“Which one is Aunt Judith?”

I really couldn’t say why we were whispering, between the game and the shenanigans the noise approached hazardous levels. But for this answer, my voice became even quieter. “She died of cancer in the spring.”

“Oh.”

Two plays and one commercial break later, the heat from Malik’s body shifted when he leaned down again. “It’s three. Shouldn’t we … I mean, the table needs setting.”

I looked around the room. I saw Dad and Uncle Derek and a couple other adults glance toward the bare tables, quickly bringing their eyes back to the game. The children tumbled and crawled over everything, unknowing and uncaring.

Aunt Judith would normally be putting the finishing touches on the center pieces just about now.

“Yeah.” I stood up and inherited an annual Thanksgiving task.

Natalie pulled into Kryler’s driveway with every nerve ending throbbing. The first meeting of the day was with Gustavo, and his Spanish accent and Latino looks set her off. Usually part of the day was spent in a pleasant daydream of sandy Mexican beaches, sipping Fuzzy Navels and being fed chocolate by cabaña boys and a Latino lover.

Today, the daydream would start with her tanning, her bikini top untied. Behind her, someone would pour warm oil over her. When she looked over her shoulder Kryler would be there, smiling, rubbing the oil in, moving his hands lower in a sensual massage. The daydream disintegrated time and again to making love in the waves, making love on an empty stretch of beach, being carried into a hammock under palm trees and having amazing sex.  Anytime she had a few non-thinking moments – standing in line for lunch, walking down the hall, waiting for the computer to save – her mind would return to the beach and Kryler.

The drive from work had every daydream from the day replay with phantom strokes touching her back, her breasts, between her legs. She was so wet and ready, she was shaking.

Natalie used her key to get in. Must be nice to inherit a house from an aunt. With no student loans, since he dropped out of college, Kryler was home free monetary-wise. Half of his paycheck went to his 401K. The man was so lucky, he drove a car he won answering one of those “come in today, you have already won contests” from a dealer.  The type you go and get a new water bottle or screwdriver; the type only one person in the United States is going to go home with a new car he didn’t pay for.

Still she couldn’t complain about his generosity. His one-year anniversary gift to her for dating was paying off a student loan. One down, only seven to go. Maybe she should consolidate, but if she did she would lose some of the special privileges offered for student loans. Consolidation switches the loan to a bank loan.

Frowning she tucked her shoes beside another four sets in the entrance way. Drat, he wasn’t alone. Her typical luck.

She looked in the designer-home quality kitchen. Copper pots hung over the cooking island. Not a dirty dish to be seen. He and his three guests hadn’t broken for dinner yet.

She removed a few bills from her purse as she went deeper in the house to the man-cave basement.  Sounds of rolling dice welcomed her as she made her way down the steps. Four boys were gathered around the table with stacks of paper, pencils, a couple of weird screens, and dice. Kryler declared, “The goblin found a kink in your armor and his rusty knife bites deeply. You take 10% damage.”

“Shit, I already was down to 50%.” Efren shuffled papers around. “During my next round, I will be using a Nightingale bandage to close the wound.”

“Sounds great, you won’t need to check for tetanus if you heal the wound with magic.”

Andre, who had been facing the staircase, greeted her during the lull in action. “Hey, Natty, what’s up?”

She hated being called Natty. Kryler’s friends were an immature, irreverent bunch of computer geeks, constantly over playing games. Not a single one of them had a girlfriend. She wasn’t even certain Efren or Will had ever kissed a girl, though Will was pushing thirty.

But while they might not know what to do with a real woman, she did know what to do with them when she wanted alone time with Kryler.

And she really, really needed alone time with Kryler right now. God, just one good stroke and she would cum screaming.

“Sorry to interrupt boys, but I need Kryler for a moment.” Her high heel pumps, tight skirt, and overly sensitive clit kept her hips swaying as she made her way to Kryler’s chair.

“Oh, no.” … “Damn.” … “But it was just getting good.” Went around the table.

“Here’s twenty-five dollars. Go do a pizza run.” She tossed the money out as she leaned over to bite Kryler’s ear.

Andre picked up the money as Natalie slid her hand inside Kryler’s shirt when he leaned back into her nibbling. Her Peter Pan pulled her face closer to kiss her firmly on the lips.

The three lost boys started making their way up the stairs. She could feel the uncomfortable waves rising off of Will and Efren and smirked as Kryler pulled her into his lap. Soon she would have him to herself.

Andre spoke for the group. “Umm, we will be going then. The pizza will take about an hour since we aren’t calling ahead.”

Arranging herself astride Kryler’s lap, so he could feel her wetness against his stiff jeans, Natalie replied, “And boys, get a pizza with plenty of meat for my man here. He is going need some protein by the time you get back.”

Kryler slid his hands under her rump, arching her cleavage into his mouth. Over the hurried pounding of the leaving boys, he whispered, “You do realize you just solidified my rep with them for all time.”

Natalie laughed. “Now you just need a solid rep with me.”

He lifted her onto the table, pushing over a screen. Several dice bounced noisily onto the floor, rolling towards his overpriced game console. She pulled off his “STAND BACK, I’m about to do science” T-shirt, tossing it after the dice. He yanked off her underwear and pushed the skirt high before unbuttoning his fly.

“Well, I have a hard rep right here.” His rigid cock rubbed against her throbbing slit. “Ready to believe?”

“Convince me.”

Flash: Ride

Rating: Mature

Parking her car, Natalie could not remember the last time she laughed so hard. Kryler was pure fun.

She eyed him as the motorcycle pulled in beside her. Had she really agreed to be taken for a spin before he went in to work?

She must be more tired than she thought. Jetlag, Up all night getting the presentation ready. Up all weekend with family for the wedding. Last minute preparation for the trip and the meeting the week before. When was the last time she had more than two hours sleep in a row?

Watching him pull off his helmet and store it, a zing shivered through Natalie. Funny, she didn’t feel tired at all.

“Why don’t you come up and wait while I change into slacks?” Natalie offered as she closed and locked her car door.

“I’ll follow wherever you lead, beautiful.”

Another carefree laugh escaped at his easy complement. She hadn’t felt this happy when her sister said “I do.” And she had been looking forward to that wedding forever. The guy was a total Peter Pan and she felt like Wendy being asked to learn how to fly.

As the elevator jerked to a start, Natalie swayed. Kryler steadied her with an arm around the waist.  The arm was still around her as the old machine lurched to a stop at the sixth floor. Her stomach twisted as he stroked the small of her back waiting for the doors to open.

She could feel her panties damping.

Natalie stepped off the elevator and away from the wayward hand. Quickstepping down the hall, she chastised herself. The hand was not wayward. He had done nothing wrong. In fact, her problem was the hand had not been wayward enough. She wanted it on her ass. Exploring her.

She wanted Kryler to misbehave, be rude or aggressive. So she could kick him to the curb and be done with it.

Fiddling with the key in the door. So, what do you want girl – his hand on your ass or kick him to the curb?

Why don’t I decide after I have him between my legs?

On the motorcycle … on the motorcycle.

Exhaustion. Had to be.

So why did every nerve feel wide awake?

“Make yourself at home.” Natalie waved Kryler in her barren living space while continuing to her bedroom. She kept meaning to get additional furniture. But between work and graduate school, and now all the extra hours trying to prove herself, she still only had a lonely sofa and small television.

With little else to look at, she knew his eyes focused on her ass and put a little extra sway into her hips. The tight skirt and high business pumps already set up a good pendulum motion; she didn’t add extra ginger to her sway so much as stopped minimizing the hip movement before disappearing behind closed doors.

Unbuttoning her blouse, she glanced at the clock. Nine-thirty. Already?

The boy needed to be at work in two hours. A motorcycle trip would chew up half that, at least.

Wiggling out of her skirt, she came to a decision. Maybe she would regret it later.

But, hey, you only live once.

She could always strip the boy from her life when he stopped being fun.

She wasn’t used to fun, so she didn’t think the appeal would last long.

Natalie opened the door. “Hey, would you mind coming here? I am not certain any of my slacks are heavy enough for the ride.”

“Sure thing.” His agreeable tenor responded.

Kryler stopped in the bedroom doorway.

Black bra, panties and high heels. Hair freed from its constant bun.

She stalked him.

His brown eyes stared into hers as she pulled off his T-shirt and tossed it onto her valet.

He leaned against the jam for support.

Natalie started unbuttoning his jeans after trailing a finger down his rather exceptional six-pack.

“Never mind,” she whispered. “I’ve decided on a different type of ride.”

Flash: Presentation

Natalie paced. The cubicle wasn’t large enough to contain her energy and the tech desperately trying to return her computer to working order. The clock on the wall slowly counted the seconds as the boy with the cute butt crawled under her desk. Somehow, at the same time, the clock quickly ticked the minutes to her morning meeting.

She had completed her presentation. Stored it as required on Thursday. Now as Monday passed into Tuesday, she had no access. She had to have it .The presentation would ace her performance review. Her first one ever since getting her MBA. The one to move her from glorified data entry into the management fast track. She knew it. She could taste it.

“Maybe we should call one of the real computer guys in.”

“If you want to wait until morning, not a problem.” The tenor voice bounced off the underside of her desk. “They upgraded the system over the weekend, shoving in damn near 50 hours of rewiring and testing while everyone was off for the three-day holiday. Hell, they slept on the receptionist’s couch. Today they showed up at 6 am and stayed until 9 pm working out bugs. Unless you are the CEO, they ain’t answering the phone. And even that is questionable. Those dudes are comatose.”

“I know, I know.” She cursed her luck. Her sister had used the holiday to get married, so Natalie had flown across the country. Thunderstorms grounded her return plane on Sunday. Her rescheduling didn’t resolve until late on Monday. Hence arriving at the office close to midnight to discover her computer did not work. “Are you sure you can fix it?”

“I may not work on the helpdesk here, but I’ve done lots of computer trouble-shooting.” The guy scooted from under her desk. His longish brown hair could use a trim, and his blue jeans, now covered in dirt, screamed the casual attitude imbedded in the night-time call center operators.  “You’re just lucky someone knew to call me.”

“If you say so.”

“You of little faith.” The guy masterfully pushed the button to start her CPU before plopping in her chair. She would need to brush the dust and cobwebs off before sitting down. With the time rapidly closing on three am, she did not have time to go home for another business suit

The computer rebooted with its normal glacial speed. Not understanding what the screen messages meant, she stared at his face. It was very expressive, letting her know he thought everything was going well.

His face was also nice. Pleasant. Sharp cheekbones balanced a strong chin. His overlong bangs drooped over his brown eyes. His T-shirt declared he was a “100% Pure Jenius”. He had no idea how to dress for success, but his clothes had been in good repair until he went crawling through the grime on her behalf. His body was also a little past average attractiveness. Slim but muscular. The T-shirt hung loose enough she didn’t know if he had a six-pack or suffered the results of six packs. But his arms were sinewy, and the jeans left no doubt about his tight ass. Natalie always had a thing for good butts.

“And there we go.” The twenty-something male popped out her chair. “Applause and compliments accepted.”

“No, really?!?” She took the vacated seat, temporarily forgetting the dirt in her eagerness and relief. A few quick clicks sent twelve copies of her presentation to the printer. The shared printer’s hum echoed through the empty cubicle farm. “I can’t thank you enough.”

She turned in her chair to face the man braced in the opening of her not-quite wall. “Really, I owe you something. Have you had dinner, or lunch, or whatever meal break you guys have?”

He shook his head. “Nothing is open this late at night. We always pack, except Friday’s when we do a potluck thing.”

“Okay.” Natalie placed her hand gently on his arm. “Again, thank you. I really mean it.”

A considering look passed over the guys expressive face. “How about we meet somewhere after you get off work? You can tell me how the presentation went and buy me dinner.” His eyebrows wiggled. “You did say you owe me and I would love to know how this turns out.”

The guy was actually trying to score a date, a date where she paid. She laughed. “Dinner or breakfast?”

He shifted in the doorway to lean to one side. “My meals tend to be reversed. I grab breakfast on the way home and fall into bed. So how about it? Dinner? I can give you my phone number and you text me when and where to meet you. Or, if something else comes up, let me know I am on my own.”

“Why not? I do owe you something.” Natalie passed over a yellow Post-It pad and a pen.

Flash: Unexpected Consequences

Smoke curled outward from under Mohan’s duster, seeking lungs to fill.

“Who’s there?” yelled the recent vampiric conversion. A silver chain on his ankle limited his movement to the illuminated area of the spotlight. His night vision would not develop for three more nights, granting the watcher effective invisibility. She was impressed he had sensed her entrance, sitting quietly beside the empty rust-stained bowl until she changed shape.

Once the cavern swallowed the last echoing “therrrrre”, the new arrival cautiously drew air to speak. Holding the breath a moment, testing its flavor, she then slowing moved it over her vocal cords to answer, “Emily, Dion’s sire … your grandsire and keeper.”

“Where’s Dion?” Mohan rushed the light’s edge, pacing back and forth with his chain chiming against the stones. He earnestly sought her location, despite the disorienting echo. A useless task as he had not had a chance to develop the skill set; her servants had been under strict order to remain silent during his captivity.

“Being disciplined.” The vampire elder coldly stated as she moved over the loose overburden and wet tailings, judging the fog’s reach.

Mohan stilled as he processed the information. Living habits clung to him like leeches. His constant movement was distracting, but understandable. Only a week had passed since his removal from the grave; so she forgave him the disgusting habits he was displaying.

“He wasn’t supposed to turn me, was he?” Mohan’s brown curls fell across his forehead as despair hunched his shoulders.

“Awarding our blood to other supernaturals, can have …” Emily paused watching the smoke thicken and reach further into the abandoned mine before completing her thought, “… unexpected consequence.”

Mohan wiped his hands over his face. “Did you destroy him?”

“He is young, less than four decades old. I decided he should be given a chance to learn.” Emily took another breath to continue talking and this time felt the fog fill the corners of her little used lungs. She felt something, a wish to reassure the suffering child, hold him. Crushing the feeling to unfeeling, Emily declared, “You will not see Dion again.”

“But he only did it to save me!” Mohan shouted. “We love each other! Please!”

Whispering a final begging crossed his lips, “please.”

Jealousy, a much more familiar emotion than compassion, ripped through her. She nearly closed to force obsession on the boy. His love should only be for her.

…. Interesting gift, that fog. A little too visible at the moment. But she could already think of a few uses. The fog must be gaining in strength, otherwise her servants would have released him by now.

She would have to take over all care of the youngling. She pushed the bowl of blood she had brought with her across the light’s edge. Again, compassion tried to sneak in as she watched Mohan collapse crying. Tomorrow, after she has cleansed herself and arranged for a means to communicate without breathing his air, she would need to decide if she would let this one live.
