Book Review (SERIES): Fleet of Malik

Fleet of Malik by Liana Brooks

  1. Bodies in Motion
  2. Change in Momentum

Another series from one of my favorite authors. A perfect marriage of future-humanism sci-fi, romance, and mystery-thrillers. Plus people of color in the mix. These are complicated so it takes her a while to write them. Fingers crossed that she will be a bug to write a bunch of them soon!

Selena Caryll lost everything in the war—her ship, her crew, her family. Although technically on the winner’s side, her lack of crew makes her easy pickings in any fight—and any bar brawl. But she never goes down without swinging.

Titan Sciarra, on the losing side of the war, brokered a kind of peace with the winners, enough to let him live as the fragile bridge between the two sides. As a Fleet Guardian, he deals with the day-to-day operations of the fleet—and breaks up bar brawls when necessary.

As a Guardian, obviously he should walk the fired-up Selena home. Make sure she gets there safe.

Definitely without flirting. That could bring his delicately spun balance crashing down, dragging the fleet with him.

If only a way existed to get the bodies of the fleet into motion again.

An action-packed enemies-to-lovers romance in a world drawn with stunning vision and depth—don’t miss this fantastic series from Liana Brooks.

MY REVIEW for BODIES IN MOTION

This sweet science-fiction romance-thriller is more science-fiction than romance, creating a complicated culture of grounded spacers living in an uneasy-truce with the colonists they transported. The romantic interests were on opposite sides of the spacer war – now cold war on the ground – and all that feeds into the thriller aspects.

Ms. Brooks does it again! If you loved her Time series (Discoherence, etc), you will love this.

I admit, it took me a few chapters to grasp how the tech-enhancements created the psi-powers the spacers use. Actually, I read the chapters and took a nap – after sleeping and letting my brain short it out overnight, everything made sense.

But WOW – my friends who talk about “enhanced humans” will LOVE this series. This is exactly where people hope that technology will take us. And Ms. Brooks mashes up the enhanced human but claustrophobic culture required by spacers and their ships with the less-enhanced grounders but more-versatile culture allowed by being on planet and not worrying about where your next breath will come from if the environmental machines will fail.

Amazing worldbuilding, great characters, complicated story, murder, theft, possible political coups, … just wow.

And if you just want a sweet sci-fi romance, you got that too.

Received from publisher for an honest review.

Rowena Lee lost the man she was supposed to marry and with him any hope for a happy future in the war. Now, five years later, with a suspicious kind of peace brokered between the sides, Rowena lives a half-life in emotional isolation. Neither her former enemies nor her crew have any use for her, and her only joy comes from her new job training cadets—something made difficult lately by Commander Silar’s constant, irritating presence. If he got out of her way for just THREE SECONDS, she could actually DO her job.

Commander Hollis Silar came out of the war a hero, the golden boy who could do no wrong. Romance came easily too: easy come, and easy go. But Rowena? Challenging. Like trying to flirt with a rock. Especially since he shouldn’t associate with her in the first place.

As politics heat up on Malik IV and factions begin to draw battle lines, an unknown enemy forces Rowena and Hollis into an uneasy partnership. Love is a battlefield, and on Malik IV, war is in the air.

A sensual enemies-to-lovers romance for everyone who believes in the power of one strong woman to change the world.

MY REVIEW for CHANGE IN MOMENTUM

An enemies-to-friends science fiction romance follows a couple who trained together as children in a generational-spaceship navy, like all members of their community, then ended up on opposite sides of the war. They were both VERY good at being soldiers, leaving a wake of unforgivable actions ordered by their superiors.

Then the navy got grounded and everyone in the civil war had to live together again. Ms. Brooks has created a fascinating society of spacers who are grounded, military who are now forced to live with civilians, warriors acting as police, etc. The tech the spacers produces results that look like teleporting, telepathy, quick healing, and other psychic powers.

This series is the best futurism, altered-humans I have ever read in a sci-fi setting. You aren’t hit over the head with it, but the enhanced human capabilities are integral to the story.

Back to the romance/thriller part of the sci-fi – an complicated political plot, with spies and terrorists, is investigated by the friend-enemy couple. During the investigation, the will-kill-each-other-someday military officers are forced to work together again and again. I love the slow reveal of how people can overcome the past.

One of the best books out there on many different levels: enhanced human sci-fi, friend-enemy romance, exploration of what happens when divergent cultures meet, and political intrigue. Five star all the way.

SECOND READ THROUGH REVIEW – So my book club picked up the book on my recommendation and, of course, I had to read it again even though it had only been a few months. But in those months the world has changed and the rowdies being get up to be a flashpoint of riots to overthrow the government so that they can be changed from paid individuals to slaves again, with confrontations where the leadership tries to make it look like the poor people did the property damage has very different connotations than when I first read the book in Feb 2020. This very secondary part of the story strikes me hard and fast now in the middle of the civil disobediences of the Summer of 2020. The story still amazes and I have to remind myself this isn’t a story written in response to what is happening now, just in response to what has always been happening.

The relationship is between an Asian woman and red-head white man (previous book of this romantic series was between a white woman and a black man – Ms. Brooks often goes for PoC choices).

Still amazing, maybe even more amazing, during the second read.

Diana racks the hangers back and forth in frustration. “What should I wear?!?” She turns on her husband, “Kevin, what should I wear?”

Kevin jumps and gets a deer-in-headlight look, “Oh, sorry. Didn’t … um.” He holds the black pants, blue polo, and white socks he just pulled out of his dresser. “Um… Anything will be fine. You always look amazing.”

“Red dress,” she yanks out a pink flowing dress decorated with red flowers, then another one with simpler lines of navy with light blue and yellow swirls starting at the hems and working their way up in a pattern of flowing leaves, “or navy?”

Think Kevin, think. Input Required. “What is Susan going to wear? She’s hosting right?”

“Thank you.” Diana responds firmly putting back the pink flower dress. “You are absolutely right. Susan will be doing pink or red. She always does.”

Behind her, Kevin shudders in relief and triumph. A few seconds to shuffle into the bathroom will get him to safety.

“So navy dress or the yellow and black pant suit?” Diana holds each outfit against her body.

“I don’t know.” He tries dropping his voice so it didn’t sound whiny or panicked, but inside he is sweating. All he needed would be for her to start asking if either made her look fat. When all he could think of is the date nights she wore those outfits. Suddenly, inspiration hits. “What jewelry do you want to wear?”

“Oh, I hadn’t even thought about that.” His wife moves over to her jewelry desk, vanity, whatever she called it.

Beating feet to the bathroom, he assures her before closing the door. “Love you, honey.”

“Love you too, hon.” Leaks through the thin door of the primary bathroom.

***

Diana shakes her head at her husband’s escape. He did better than normal with advice for helping her get ready; she didn’t understand why he has so much trouble picking out outfits for her. She has no problems doing the reverse.

Laying the outfits on the bed, Diana runs her fingers along her earring choices. Both of the outfits have a high-ish neckline so she would be going with her favorite chocker, but what earrings? Maybe that …. Oh, wait. Those gold peacocks. Where had she buried them? In the third drawer she opens, she finds a beat-up pair of glasses.

“The hubby-vision. I forgot I had these.”

“What honey?” comes through the bathroom door, along with some noisy banging, like metal on metal.

“Nothing.” Diana calls back.

What in tarnation was he doing in there?

“Let’s see what outfit looks best to him.” She slides on the glasses. On the bed are two plain black outfits, one dress and a top with pants. “Really?” She tucks the glasses on top of her head and they return to the navy and gold & black clothes. “Well, now I know why he can’t help.”

She holds each up in front of her in the mirror. When was the last time she wore these? Church in late March for the navy, and the black and gold pant suit had been a work Christmas party. No overlap between the work Christmas party and this one, so the pant suit it is. She tosses the navy dress on the chair to be put away when they get back. A monogramed sweater would be a great accessory for the dress. She needed to get a bright blue one to match the swirls, or maybe a yellow one. She makes a mental note to pick one up next time she went clothes shopping.

Diana steps into the pant suit, zipping it into place. Next she adds a bit of sparkle to her update her day makeup for the party. Afterwards, she starts a concerted search for the earrings through her vanity. Under the clay bracelet her son made in kindergarten, she discovers the gold peacock earrings. Taking the glasses off her head and laying them beside her perfumes, she styles her hair into a messy bun, bringing some strands down to curl against her neck.

Does that bring too much attention to her chin? Leaning forward, Diana studies her reflection. She needed to touch up her hair color; the roots weren’t showing yet, but the dye the stylist uses didn’t stick to gray hair very well. The wrinkles at the corners of her eyes … nothing could help them, but the maybe if she stays away from bright lights.

Picking up the glasses to put them away, since Kevin did not need to get ahold of them, Diana decides to pop them on for one last look at herself in the mirror.

“Oh my, that can’t be right.”

She stands and moved to the full-length mirror. She had thought she would see herself in plain black clothes, like when the outfit had been on the bed.

Reaching up, she lowers the glasses from her to doublecheck the reflection. Yep, the mirror still showed her being her, then she put them back on.

“Is that how he actually sees me?”

The most beautiful woman she has ever seen faced her in the mirror. The pant suit hugged her curves like toddlers. While messy, the bun appears like the fall-out-of-bed Hollywood perfection mix of sexy and serious, with shining hair, colored like when they started dating.

She steps closer. While most of the vision resembles an idolized version of her when they first met, the wrinkles at the corner of her eyes remained. Diana has to turn her head sideways, and look out of the side of her eyes to get a good look, but the wrinkles could be seen. It is the weirdest effect. Each line radiating out from the eye danced with laughter. She wanted to stare at those hated lines all day; because to him, stupid, loving Kevin, each line is a joy he helped bring her and she returns back to him.

“Bless your heart,” she whispers at her reflection before taking off the glasses and tucking them back into her vanity next to the clay bracelet.

Behind her, she hears the bathroom door open and the muffled footsteps of her husband on the carpeted floor.

“Hey honey, I got the drip fixed.”

Diana closes her eyes a moment, shaking her head, before opening them again. “You need to change your shirt.”

“Oh, did I make a mess?” Kevin glances down and rubs a dirty hand on the polo.

“Wash your hands first then change.”

“Okay.” Her husband cheerfully goes into the bathroom. Two of his work tools remain on the floor and a small puddle. But when he turned on the hot water, no creaking occurred. No hiss of air with a sudden gush of water splashing into the sink. Instead, the water flowed smoothly; she even could see a slight steam rising from the hot water. A few squirts of soap and a wipe on his monogrammed hand towel cleaned the grime off.

Kevin showed her his hands palm first and then flipped them over, like he is one of their kids. Diana nods her approval, paying more attention to the sink. He had turned it off once done, and now she waits for the drip.

Under her breath she counts to twenty.

“You really fixed it!”

Spinning, she sees him with his dirty shirt off, the polo tossed on top of the navy dress like it is the dirty laundry pile, and his new shirt in his hands. For a second, and for always, he is the most amazing man she has ever seen. And she is married to him. She has him all to herself. “I love you.”

Geeking Science: Percussive Defense

This imagery from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope from Oct. 8, 2022, shows the debris blasted from the surface of Dimorphos 285 hours after the asteroid was intentionally impacted by NASA’s DART spacecraft on Sept. 26. The shape of that tail has changed over time. Scientists are continuing to study this material and how it moves in space, in order to better understand the asteroid. Credits: NASA/ESA/STScI/Hubble

You can take humans off world, but you can’t take the world out of the humans. Or should this just be “humans will be humans”?
I’ve previous mentioned NASA solution of fixing the Martian Lander by having it hit itself with a shovel. (Percussive Maintenance; January 21, 2021)
Now they, our biggest scientific brains, are exploring asteroid defense of planet Earth so we don’t go by the way of the dinosaur, by …. hitting an asteroid with a solid object, in this case a DART.
Double Asteroid Redirection Test exceeded the minimum goal of changing the orbit an asteroid by 73 second by a bit … like 33 minutes … with a planned collision. (NASA. October 2022; Paoletta, 2022)
When in doubt, bang it, see what happens.
Of course they use words like “kinetic”, “impact”, “intentional”, “defense technology”. But really, we figuring out how to swing a stick in space so the bad space rocks won’t hurt us.
Ain’t science grand?
Of course scientists being scientists, they are still sorting the data what happened beyond the Percussive Defense incident. Further study indicates that the change in orbit around the second asteroid was a combination of initial impact and the ejecta tossed out from the impact. (NASA, December 2022)
DART’S LAST COMPLETE LOOK AT DIMORPHOS In a thrilling moment, DART captured this view of Dimorphos just as it was about to crash into the asteroid moon. Seconds later, the transmission ended. Credit: NASA/Johns Hopkins APL

Editing Rant: White Box

Break the White Box (cut and paste from an editing letter)

Fantasy genre is rich in texture, color, scents, and tastes. As mentioned, the dialog lacks the fantasy texture when Ping-Pong (see 1/10/2023 post) is happening. In addition, often a scene opens with a passive “real-estate” description of the situation using only copula.

Pretend example

The ping-pong table was a lawn green, but the paddles were red rubber. The cement floor was softened by the rubber pad. The rubber pad saved the players’ knees when jumping around and was broad enough so they didn’t have to worry about running off of it. Flickering neon lights were headache inducing.

Instead

A lawn green ping-pong table made the red rubber paddles vibrate under the neon lights, a color combination the eyes revolted against seeing side-by-side. A very large rubber mat sat under the table to save the players’ knees from hopping around on the unforgiving cement floor.

Actual Editing Rant

Don’t do the real-estate description. It happens so often.

The house looks like this. Has this number of rooms. Good Gardens.

Immerse the reader in the situation, full sensory overload. Don’t just provide the grocery list of features.

“Behold two houses, alike in dignity.” The Performer hovered midair, holding his victims inches above the asphalt on the lowest level of the car port. “That is to say, they have none. So hero, which one will you rescue, your sister or your wife?”
