Flash: Marriage Therapy Session 1

Greta greeted her next set of patients personally in order to calm them. The barriers usually required for psychiatric work became problematic during the beginning stages of couple therapy. Particularly sex therapy, her specialty. Later she would draw back behind the curtains of formality. Finding the balance between allowing people to open up and keeping people at a distance was difficult but necessary. Her goal was always to have the couple bond with each other and not have her consciously or unconsciously part of the relationship.

After introducing Wyatt and Liza Donnelly to her secretary, Greta led the couple to her office. She drew them away from the business desk, which they had automatically chosen to approach, to the small conversation area, where a couple of chairs and a sofa existed. She held back to see how they would sit.

Some couples chose to sit together on the sofa, used to providing a false image of marital bliss to those outside the relationship. Those were the easiest to heal. Pretending to be in love required many of the emotional reactions of being in love. Other couples had one in a chair and one on the coach, leaving her the chair on the opposite end. These couples usually could be saved; they did not want a stranger between them.

Greta frowned as the couple took the chairs on the opposite ends of the area, leaving her the center. Still the couple cared enough to contact her Internet site and arrange for therapy. Reluctantly she took the sofa position, unwilling to tower over the Donnellys during the initial interview.

The husband was dressed in a four-piece black suit. From his patent leather shoes, to the cut of his vest, his clothes spoke money and ease with it. His expensive haircut accented his cheekbones and blue eyes. The woman had an unfortunately loud yellow turtleneck sweater teamed with grey slacks, which combined completely engulfed her body. Her brown hair was pulled back in a messy bun, and her thick framed glasses hid her eyes. All her clothes could have been bought at Walmart.

Picking up her pen and pad from the coffee table, Greta smiled at the couple, turning her head to encompass both. Liza eyes dropped to her hands, while Wyatt’s met hers with frank appraisal.

“Thank you for coming by. This is the initial interview, to establish exactly where your relationship is and where you want it to be.” Greta watched as the couple relaxed, their expectations of the session being met. Now was the time to make them uncomfortable. “So let’s start with the easiest. How did you meet?”

Liza peaked over her glasses at her husband. Wyatt responded without even looking at her. “At my company. Donnelly Enterprises hired Security Tech specialists to upgrade our computer system, Liza installed the product.”

“How long ago was this?”

Wyatt shifted to take up more space in the chair, turning to completely face the doctor. “About a year ago.”

“348 days, 5 hours.” Liza whispered to her hands.

Greta blinked. “Well, that is fairly specific.”

Wyatt chuckled low. “My Liza is like that. Specific.” Liza smiled at her hands from the complement, but Greta had not missed the look Wyatt had shot his wife when she had corrected him.

“Liza, how long have you been married?”

“346 days and, um – no need to adjust for daylight savings … but two hour difference to Las Vegas time – 14 hours.”

“So you too eloped?” Greta had turned her body to face Liza, watching Wyatt out of the corner of her eye. The video cameras facing each piece of furniture would reveal even more later. Her thoroughness forced her to take less clients, but her success rate was the highest in the business. Since Greta charged appropriately, her cliental ran on the rich side.

“She was the smartest, most beautiful woman I had ever met. I wasn’t going to let her get away.” Wyatt explained, pulling attention back to himself. “It was Friday, and I had an appointment in Nevada on Sunday. I asked her to come with me to get to know her better, promised her separate rooms.”

Liza smiled shyly, raising her head. “We never did use them.”

“After the flight out Saturday morning on my private plane, we spent the day walking, talking, and rolling the dice, and eating and drinking and getting along like we were made for each other. Sometime that night we found a Justice of the Peace.”

Greta scratched notes. Not because she needed to, but because people felt more comfortable when she did. “Excellent, so you have been married less than a year. What are the problems you are experiencing?”

“Liza doesn’t want me.”

Liza’s head snapped up. “No, no. It isn’t that I don’t love you. Just since I …”

Her voice tapered off and neither of the couple filled the void. Unusual during the first interview. Usually accusations fly – he wants sex too much, she cheated on me, he won’t give me oral, she put on weight and won’t lose it so she is attractive, oh like you haven’t tucked it on too.

Finally, after the clock ticked off five minutes, Greta prodded, “Since what?”

Wyatt for the first time didn’t meet Greta’s eyes, instead his eyes drifted to the side. “Since she lost the baby.”

Greta picked up the emphasis Wyatt applied to ‘she’. She repeated back the answer, slightly differently. “Since the two of you lost the baby?”

Liza, with her hands knotted in her lap with white knuckles showing, nodded . Wyatt’s eyes snapped to Greta face, and growled, “Yes, since the two of us lost the baby.”

Wyatt’s hands gripped his chair. “He was four months along.”

Sometimes Greta hated her job. Wounds had to be ripped open to remove the poison. “And how long ago was the miscarriage?”

Liza did not provide her accurate time. After a minute wait, Wyatt replied, “Seven months.”

Dealing with a miscarriage less than five months into a relationship, many couples involved far longer, who had history of how to deal with issues and problems, could not handle that.

“And what do the two of you want to do with your marriage? What is the goal of these sessions?”

Wyatt shifted in his thousand dollar suit, while keeping his attention on Greta. “To heal. I want my marriage to heal.”

“Then you need to get up and hold your wife.” Greta directed.

“Why?” Wyatt looked confused.

“Because she is crying.”

Wyatt finally turned his attention to his wife. Liza had pulled her feet up onto the chair and was sobbing with her face buried in her knees. He whispered, “But she never cries.”

Characters have lives of their own, or when I tried to write a short flash today

You may noticed I posted two flashes today. I started about 8 in the morning and ended about 5. My goal was to write one flash based on a Breathless Press Sunday Flash picture of a man undressing. I thought I would have the character be in marriage counseling and he would strip as part of the therapy

You may have heard authors talk about characters going off on their own. Or started the story in the wrong spot and needed to start over. Seems strange, right? After all the stuff is all in the head. How could characters in your head do anything other than what you want them to do. And how can a story start in the wrong spot. Stories start where they start – right?

Well, I started the story way too early to have the guy strip during marriage counseling. The scene didn’t happen because the couple needed real counseling before sexual counseling could take place. I didn’t know that until the characters started their scene. So after three hours, I had a flash (Session One) which had nothing to do with the picture I was aiming for.

So I started over. Same characters, same situation, just a different point in their lives. Five hours later I had a pretty good short story pushing 3K words – not a flash suitable for posting on breathlessblog.com. But the strip scene was in it.

So I slashed out that scene and posted it as Session Nine.

I thought I would post both for your reading pleasure so you can compare how the same exact character in the same situation can have very different things happen.

Again, everyone, thanks for your ongoing support.

So the Marriage Therapy story has finally come around as part of the on-going reprint of old stories. Look for Session One on 9/16/18 and Session Nine for 9/23/18.

I realized I never got around to publishing the original (nearly 3K) story from which I exhumed Session Nine. It has a little something special about our marriage counselor, so I though you might like to see that too. Look for the long version on my 2000 Word day – 9/30/18.

Again, thank you everyone for your ongoing support. Happy reading!

Flash: Kissing Extra Long (Prelude)

Abigail watched Justin Rider kiss Cynthia Gold. Each embrace was deeper and longer, the couple reluctantly breaking apart before being drawn together again. The whole scene was perfect. Lighting spotlighted the couple, and hid Abby in the crowd. Vicariously Abby lived the embrace, feeling Justin press her against his svelte frame, his hands warming the small of her back. She suppressed a sigh.

“Cut,” yelled the second director, “and that is a wrap folks.” The couple stayed kissing a little longer, Cynthia grasping Justin’s coat label to maintain contact.

Ignoring the lingering affection between his stars now the movie was in the can, the director, Luke Benson, grabbed the mike from the second director and added, “First, I like to thank all you extras for your work. Detroit has been awesome to work with.”

Luke climbed on one of the chairs, making his tall frame visible to everyone on the closed street doubling as a set. “Second, don’t forget to turn in your vouchers. You will be getting an invite to the wrap party. Finally, I want to see you all at the wrap party tomorrow night. We couldn’t have pulled this off without you – now go home and sleep.”

Taking one last look at her Hollywood crush, Abigail was startled to see Justin staring at her. She had talked to him one day when sleet had delayed shooting. He had been awesome, going around and visiting all of the extras. Having worked several movies, Abby knew most stars avoid this. Just too many people to get to know everyone all the time; they had to save pieces of themselves. They gave so much away all the time.

Justin had talked to her about her knitting and she had given him the cat hat she had been working on. She couldn’t believe it when she had seen the kitten ears poking off his head on days when he was on set, but not in makeup yet. The movie was been shot in late fall, to take advantage of the long nights, and Detroit was cold. She was glad she had given him something he could use. She waved happily at him and his dimples flashed back. He picked up her hat from the back of his chair, waved it a second, and tucked it on his head.

Strewn with blood and bone, the celestial battlefield had no dead bodies for only the immortal angels fought. Feathers and skin burned as fiery swords melted through exhausted defenses. The raqia below formed and turned for untold eons only noticed by the opposing armies as a down direction. A few angels had fallen towards the new planet when wings had been clipped, but mended long before hitting ground and the beings immediately returned to the ranging maelstrom.

In the conflict’s center stood proud Lucifer, an angel who questioned his purpose and demanded free will. His army formed a protective sphere around their assigned general. Michael, Uriah, Gabriel and Raphael were unable to drive their undying legions through the blockade to the heavenly traitor.

The swirl of battle broke combatants apart and reunited others. Beyond the immediate strife, Kamella protected a pathway. The Supreme Being had plucked her out of Michael’s soldiers. She was pleased to stand guard while the Supreme Being crafted a new plane of existence. Firstly, being chosen was an honor. Secondly, defending the way removed her from the possibility of crossing blades with Herne. For untold eternities they had delighted each other. Assigned to different archangels, no restriction was placed on their relationship. Now that blessing turned into a curse.

Only a few of Lucifer’s rebels escaped the four armies surrounding them. Kamella dispatched the depleted minions quickly. Skilled in war as few angels were before Lucifer’s ego selfishly consumed him, her great stature allowed her to stand easily against two or three angels by herself. The midnight winged creature wielded two fire swords and two shields, leaving two of her six hands free for grappling.

Outside the primary engagement, she watched and worried. Somehow Lucifer was slowly gaining and the outer defense sphere leaked. More and more opposition tried to investigate the road she defended. None passed over the threshold.

A spike attack broke combatants free from the center. Dozens of multi-hued beings were funneled to her post and the broad paved avenue beyond. Several had form-changed into ferocious visages. At their front was a golden haired angel who remained in the form he had been shaped to hold. His black eyes flashed in his perfect face. In his left hand was a blue-flamed sword. His right hand curled in a half-formed charm. Herne, the love of her existence and one of Lucifer’s best scout captains, closed on her position.

Not wanting to see what her clever male was about to release, Kamella completed the three-in-one spell she kept at ready for an organized mass attack. Two clones flew out to meet the new arrivals; black avenging angels plunging into the fray against the servants of the Angel of Light. Flame and steel clashed with renewed fury. Herne’s charm failed when one of his companions severed wing fell on him.

Without hesitation Kamella attacked Herne when he came to rest relative to her. His scouting group’s armor and battle skills wavered under her other selves’ fury. Blinking back tears, she effortlessly blocked his attack with one uplifted shield and drove her right sword into his hip. She whispered, “I’m sorry,” as he fell to his knees.

Her regret did not keep her from using her left side shield to throw Chase’s attack out of line. Grabbing Herne’s closest friend and second-in-command with her two free limbs, she lifted him with a grunt and threw him at an incoming monstrosity. Her own huge size made dodging difficult but the collusion displaced the flyer enough to miss her and sail past the nexus she guarded.

Herne tried to use the diversion to roll past her. She kicked his burning side with her booted foot.

“Please don’t make me do this.” She begged.

Grabbing her boot to topple her, Herne replied. “We must serve as we were created, my heart.”

Her red tipped wings caressed his face as they pushed him closer to her legs. She used his recentered mass to increase her personal balance. Her black and his white feathers mingled in a parody of embrace.

She needed to concentrate on eliminating his squad. With regret, she drove a sword through his leg to prevent him from sneaking past. His scream pierced her.

Turning her face to where her last duplicate fought, Kamella’s blue eyes widened as she watched the sphere surrounding Lucifer explode out with the force of a nova. Angels boiled towards her in the hundreds.

Bracing herself forward against the wind of beating wings, she fell at the sudden pressure change on her back. She burned her hand grabbing the sword she pinned Herne with to prevent him further injury. She used the fiery steel to pivot and landed hard on her side beside him, pulling the sword lose. Her large wings protected them both as the Supreme Being’s presence passed over them, returning to the celestial arena.

*ENOUGH! THOU WILT HOLD*

Even Lucifer’s minions froze at the command. For too long the Being they been created to worship had been absent. Everywhere swords lowered and the choir started offering adoration.

Herne’s limited two arms devoted themselves entirely to encircling her waist, hugging her closer during the moment’s peace. Without thinking Kamella’s chin rubbed the blond’s hair in affection.

Muffled by their wings, the coupled barely heard Lucifer resonant voice rallying against his Liege.

Kamella grasped the white angel’s face with two hands. Just before she captured her favorite lips, Herne whispered, “I will love you forever.” Covered by angel wings, the two kissed.

*A PLACE HAS BEEN PREPARED FOR YOUR RULE. MAY YOU LEARN HOW TO DO SO.  NOW GET THEE AND YOUR LEGIONS HENCE.*

Rolling onto her back before her greater weight crushed him, Kamella howled as Herne was torn from her arms with one final Word from the Supreme Being to Lucifer.

*BEGONE*

Grabbing with her half dozen hands, she tried to capture him before he was exiled from her plane of existence. Her enormous strength allowed her to succeed. Tapping the ability to change shape, she transformed her feet into claws to anchor herself to the firmament. Blue eyes met black in fear and desperation. Created as mirrors to each other, they had only tolerated the rebellion knowing when it was over they would be reunited. His legs were being tugged into the whirlwind siphoning Lucifer and his followers. Her arms bulged as she tried to save him.

“No!” she cried.

In the end, the Word of the Supreme Being determined the outcome. Even their immortal flesh could not deny the instruction. Herne twisted and turned as the whirlwind worked to free him from her grasp. Both wrists holding him back shattered as she tried to absorb the worst of the torque to save him pain. Bones burst through skin, covering her arms and hands with slippery blood. Before her other hands could grasp his forearms, Herne was snatched away.

Kamella collapsed in anguish as Herne’s face disappeared screaming down the path she had guarded for so long.

Others returned to their appropriate levels in heaven. Locking her agony away, Kamella picked up her swords with her quickly healing hands and returned to her post. The Supreme Being had not changed her orders.

None shall pass over the threshold without permission.

Facing towards Lucifer’s realm, Kamella’s long watch started. The black she searched for scouts foreshadowing the Fallen’s next attack only reminded her of eyes she would never see again.

Book Review: The Witches Walk (Haven Harbor #1)

The Witches Walk (Haven Harbor #1) by Jeanne Adams

BOOK BLURB ON AMAZON

Welcome to Haven Harbor, Massachusetts!

In 1691, a group of renegade witches fled Salem in the dark of night, escaping the desperate evil that spawned the Witch Trials. They struck out to form their own town, with their own rules. Three hundred years later, their descendants celebrate by retracing those steps, but this year, a new evil stalks the Witches Walk…

It’s Time for The Witches Walk!

She’s got a plan. Burned out, beaten down, and on the brink of a career implosion, event management dynamo Mari Beecham bypasses the contract of a lifetime to take a job in a community known for its strange, spooky happenings. She doesn’t buy into the story line about the witches founding the town, but it’s great publicity. Bottom line? If she can make the annual Witches Walk a top destination event, she’ll save her career and, maybe, find some balance. She’ll do it, too, if “First Son of Haven Harbor” Peregrine Hestworth will stop interfering.

He’s in her way. As Town Council chair, Pere is serious about the safety and welfare of his people. He doesn’t want to like Mari. Even if he didn’t suspect his meddlesome mother of weaving a matchmaking spell, he still would have voted against hiring the petite whirlwind with a spine of steel. His visions of fire and death moving to Haven Harbor along with Mari are too deadly to ignore.

As trouble brews and the event stalls, the attraction between Mari and Pere bubbles like a cauldron. When a woman is attacked, and another disappears, Pere knows his unreliable foresight has hit the mark this time. An old evil is rising, with a new vendetta, and if they can’t work together, the devastation Pere foresees will take his town, along with the woman he’s coming to love.

MY REVIEW

A fun read and worth four and a half stars, just a breath shy of perfect for the genre, a paranormal romance thriller/murder-mystery mix. The book starts off slow, but builds to its lightning-packed conclusion, giving you time to get to know the town and people.

This very appropriate first book for a promising series introduces several potential singles you get to like and look forward to seeing in future books finding their true loves. (I really want Jake and Dan to get HEAs, and Jeff and Lydia too when I think about it.) Two more books of the series are already out when I read this in August 2017 – but only as physical books and I soooo want to read them right now. Kindle has spoiled me. Oh, and the potential romances aren’t the only thing I want to follow forward – whether a certain witch finds herself an apprentice, seeing what the background big-bad has planned for its next attack, and, of course, exploring the really cool magick of the Haven Harbor Witches.

The first half of the book is about relationships being developed – welcoming a new person into town, power plays, family dynamics, and planning events. The second part is where the romance and the thriller action goes from the smoldering-tinder-gently-fed-hoping-a-spark-will-catch level to out-of-control bonfires. Ms. Adams somehow keeps both bonfires roaring without one consuming the other.

A good read and I think the next in the series, now the world has been established, will be even better.

Time to Read: About seven hours.
