Book Review: The Midnight Library

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

BOOK BLURB ON AMAZON

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig’s enchanting blockbuster novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.

MY REVIEW

(Book trigger warning: Suicide Idealization)

Been there, didn’t choose that, regret.
But what if you could review all the regrets of your life and see the other choices? The Midnight Library provides the opportunity.

The concept of “Redo” of regrets is one authors and readers keep circling back to. “I can do it better this time!” And yet, and yet, not really. The “It’s a Wonderful Life” movie and Charles Dickens “Christmas Carol” are two examples of this recycling concept in action.

The Midnight Library’s particular version of the regret-redo uses the library of life trope where every book contains a life, in this case – the life of the main character (MC). This manuscript brings nothing new to the plate of regret-redos storylines, except updating the regret-redo concept for 2020 readers.

Which isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes basic concepts that people explore as their life moves forward just need a dust off for the next generation to consider. Regret being one. Mr. Haig does create a wide range of choices and has a strong MC to work from, plus the story keeps a good balance between reflection and exploration.

Flash: The Endless Night

Beyond the Veil – NASA ID: PIA13885 (original link: https://images.nasa.gov/details/PIA13885 )

The night went on forever. Dorothy let one leg fall over the side of the small shuttle’s edge as she sat astride the open airlock, enjoying the cold. At just over five Kelvin, she could feel the chill in her bones. She remembered days growing up where her breath created mists during Philadelphia winters. This felt about like that; if her lungs still needed breath, she would exhale to see if it would crystalize before evaporating into the vacuum.

She missed the stars twinkling in atmosphere. Out here, the bright points of light burned steady from a thousand, thousand sources. She looked down-well toward the star her fleet had taken their last stand around, tracking the slightly larger, mildly yellow pinpoint as the ship she sat in slowly spun, and felt the draw of the planets that way.

Each sung with gravity, magnetism, and solar wind eddies.

Life filled one of those planets. Thinking life. Her parasite wanted it. A simple push out and she could let gravity take her there.

What’s a decade of falling with all that food at the end?

Vibrations shook the polymer surface she leaned against. Morse code wasn’t the fastest communication, but in space, no one could hear you scream. She had needed some screaming time away from Shuttle-Nine. Who now was checking in.

Longer and shorter vibrations continued until the message was complete: Forty-eight hours.

She slapped her hand down hard once for “Yes” to indicate she received the message. The action sent her drifting up.

Pausing for one last look, Dorothy let her soul swallow its fill of the impossible dark littered with stars, the real ones leftover from the largest explosion of all time and the small ones scattered from man’s poor imitation of the infinite. Two armadas destroyed forty-eight astronomical units away from the nearest star. Hulls, and the bodies, equipment, and munitions which used to be held within them, drifting aimlessly under gravity’s weak control.

Her hunger turned her eyes back down-well as the ship’s spin returned it into view. A body reheated for blood didn’t satisfy at the level eating the living did. She yearned for the planet of sentients. A monster waiting in the night.

Dorothy stepped back from the edge and thumbed the lock shut.

Shuttle-Nine filled the enclosed space with air and heat, bringing the small area up to two hundred fifty Kelvin; a toasty negative ten degrees Fahrenheit.

“Did you have a good break?” her machine companion asked. Greeting number two of seven it varied for her sanity. It preferred the options with questions, as its programming indicated interaction elevated mental survival health.

The vampire smiled. Shuttle-Nine tried so hard to appear fully sentient, but it didn’t make her parasite hungry. Not like that budding civilization out there. “Yes, thank you. Did you figure out where one of the parts we need to finish rebuilding the fabricator is?”

“Calculations have come back. There is a three point nine percent chance Road Less Travel might have screw style seven, lith-nick alloy within the transit conduit based on the partial design plans you restored from maintenance ship Forum and Folly; the missile did not explode until it hit crew quarters a hundred and nineteen meters further in from the conduit. While the transit conduit was destroyed by secondary explosions, parts might be recoverable. There is an additional one point two percent chance of a plate of carbon tubing within the hydroponics area as no direct hits to that area is visible to what my sensors could process.”

“Has the course been plotted?” Dorothy asked as she made her way to the food bank and set one to warming for blood flow. Only six bodies left, nearly time to go pull more in. It should be fairly easy to pick up some near the deceased cruiser; expelled bodies didn’t travel far from their point of origin.

“Time of travel will be eighteen days at present state of repairs.”

“Implement.” Her sensitive ears heard the wires hiss and pop, feeding the magnetic coil she had attached to the left outside gravity plate. Nothing sounded different from the previous trips they had slowly made through the debris field since she had rewired the jury-rigged system six years ago.

The carbon tubing, even if the plate was warped would be a blessed bonus. Poor Shuttle-Nine’s artificial intelligence was operating with only a thimbleful of traditional calculators in support. Creating the choice limitations for the next stage of their search had taken her a week to program, a partially melted user manual being a poor substitute in lieu of the advance education needed for the task, especially when read by someone trained to be a janitor in 1940, and who knows how long it had taken to run. She had waited three days before deciding to step out and enjoy the night. With some functional tubing, she maybe could reconnect the navigation bank properly to the AI’s core, quadrupling its traditional calculating power. She had been stockpiling those types of manuals, both in physical and in electronic form.

Forcing down the stagnant blood barely meeting the needs of her parasite, she mentally prepared for the month crawl through another ghost ship haunting the empty night.

Election Time

Vote.

Vote like your rights depend on it.

Vote like your DAUGHTERS and SONS depend on it. Vote like your FRIENDS and COWORKERS rights depend on it.

Because they do.

Normally I don’t pick sides, voting is enough. But based on the past eight years …

Don’t forget people who thought it OK to support and look the other way during what is normally a polite changeover of government. The standard in courtesy after a loss is supporting our nation by helping the incoming president. Giving him or her the information for months in advance to help smooth the transition in government. That didn’t happen. Instead a viper decided to turn on his own Vice President, when the Vice President decided to uphold the Constitution, actively trying to throw him and our nation to a mob.

Remember if the Constitution is done away with, so goes the Bill of Rights. Do you really think someone wanting to change out a democratic republic to an authoritarian government will keep the average citizen armed?

Don’t forget the people who held out country hostage, refusing to choose a Speaker of the House, refusing to put into place generals and military officers so we couldn’t help our allies, refusing to fund our government.

Remember that fearmongering the concept of communism and actively supporting Russia should not go hand-in-hand.

Don’t forget destroying the rights of personal body autonomy for women, voting rights of people of color, breathing rights of different genders … the RIGHTS OF PEOPLE … should be answered with WE THE PEOPLE!!!

Remember we stand together or we fall separate.

Vote.

“Pops, will you slow down? Ain’t we suppose to be running in the other direction?” The thirty-five year old man scrambled over fallen pine trees.

At the crest of the impact crater, his gray-haired father bellycrawled the final few feet, his deer bow in hand. Pye, Junior’s teenage daughter, right beside him. Nuts, the two of them. And him, the tree tying them together following in their wake. He crouched crawled to their location.

Looking down in to the cleared sand of the pine barrens, he saw a circular UFO with the disc vertical and the half the circumference buried deep. Junior quiet-whistled against his teeth, “Someone is having a very bad day.”

“I’m not sure,” Pye squinted through the early mist rising out of the aquifer below the pine barrens sand. “I mean if they are a spinning ship, and that is kind-of what it looked like as they streaked overhead, then the gravity would be on the outer edge, so if you were to dismount, it would be through the floor. It would make sense for flying saucers to land edge up, right?”

“Good point, girl” His father whispered.

Junior was glad all those comics and adventure books leaked something into his kid’s brain. “Still it is a crash, pretty sure.”

George grunted agreement.

“Any landing you walk away from is a good landing, isn’t that what you say Pops?” Pye asked.

“Not seeing much walking.” George observed and started to stand. “The mist has made down the walls and isn’t burning off near the hull. Whatever that material is, it took care of the heat quickly. Come on, they might need help.”

Pye bounced up, following her grandfather down the sandy sides of the crater in a sideways slide. Youthful curiosity burst the question out burning in Junior as he followed the two with the dune-sand walk he picked up during his time in Afghanistan.  “What should we do if they say, ‘Take us to your leader’?”

“Well, election is next week, so I guess I’ll make introductions depending on their attitude.” George limped across the loose sand in the bottom of the crater. “If they are rude, they’ll get one. Nice, the other.” He winked at Junior. “But in the meantime, they might be in trouble. Always lead with kindness.”

“But pack heat while doing so.” The perky teenager touched the flare gun she carried beside the hunting arrows.
