Season of the Vampire (Series) by Lana Pechercyvk

  1. The Secrets of Shadow and Blood
  2. A Labyrinth of Fangs and Thorns
  3. A Symphony of Savage Hearts

I really enjoyed Lana Pechercyvk’s Deadly Seven superhero romance prose series and wanted to try other books by her. I didn’t like the Season of the Wolf (too Alpha male fated-mate for my tastes) but decided to try again with the Season of the Vampire. The results were … mixed.

In the shadows, vision can turn blurry. Truths can become lies. Enemies can become lovers.

When Violet inexplicably wakes thousands of years after a nuclear holocaust, she finds the world very different. Fae exist now. They’re vicious, animalistic monsters who pervert magic and can morph into any shape—including vampires. They hoard the bounty of the new world, and keep humans banished to the wasteland. At least, that’s what the humans of today have told her. Determined to make up for an unforgivable mistake in her past, she becomes a covert assassin and seeks revenge for her human brethren. And she’s good at it. But when the thing she hunts saves her life, injuring himself in the process… her crystal clarity suddenly becomes blurry.

Vampires are meant to be monsters, not protectors… not charismatic, annoyingly handsome and loyal and… everything.

Indigo is a Fae Guardian, and a ruthless vampire protector of Elphyne. The Order has tasked him with finding a human with deadly secrets before the unhinged Unseelie Queen, or the fanatical human leader, can exploit her. They chose him for one reason, and one reason only – the taste of human blood does things to him. Addictive, dark, insatiable things. And when he catches Violet’s scent, they know he’ll do everything in his power to possess her and keep her safe. But Indigo hides his own shameful secret in the shadows of his heart, and if it ever comes to light, Violet will never trust him. She’ll kill him.

The Secrets in Shadow and Blood is the next installment in the Fae Guardians series, and the first in the Season of the Vampire Trilogy. Each book features a separate couple with a satisfying HEA, but to enjoy the full benefits of the over arching plot, start the Fae Guardian journey with book one of Fae Guardians: Season of the Wolf. All Fae Guardian books include steamy romance, a splash of time travel, monster hunting, a band of brothers, fated mates, growly fae protectors, and their strong willed women from our time. If you love your books full of page turning action, romantic tension, and world building you can get lost in, then this series is for you. Warning: Trusting these seductive fae will lead to sleepless nights. But it will be worth it.

MY REVIEW FOR THE SECRETS OF SHADOW AND BLOOD

I started this back in October 2021. Normally I swallow books whole, but the holidays pushed this novel to the backseat. I just couldn’t find time to finish it — until late January 2022, and I’m glad I did.

This is a dark post apocalyptic world, and the women coming forward from our time for the Season of the Vampire series are ones who had a hand in destroying their world, Violet most of all. Her brain conceived the bomb that destroyed everyone she knew. It left her broken in strange ways. And the new world, on her “waking” day, welcomed her with a nightmare PTSD-inducing moment.

Her response is to lash out. To hunt. Push the border of serial killer. To hate herself every moment. To try to redeem her soul. Or, more accurately, pay some imagined balance enough weight of good to offset being one of the instruments which killed billions.

It’s an interesting exploration of psyche. And matches many of the comments I’ve read about those who participated in building and dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

That being said – this is a romance, an action adventure, and a fantasy story with vampires and magic, high fantasy politics and guardian organizations. The dark mental exploration weaves throughout.

If you want a romance that is bit grittier than normal, The Secrets in Shadow and Blood delivers.

Since Peaches woke up in a fantasy world full of monsters and fae, she’s been treated like a piece of tasty human meat. After six years as a blood slave to vampires and the evil Unseelie queen – beholden to all, and master of none – there’s nothing left but a broken shell with a fractured soul. Until a deadly warrior turns up unannounced in her room.

Vampire Haze is the muscle of the Fae Guardians elite Cadre of Twelve. He is a spy, a protector of the weak, hammer and sword, a rigid enforcer of rules. He allows no one close to his heart, lest they see the shame driving him. But when he stumbles across a beguiling woman with sad, desolate eyes, he knows he must help her. She calls to him in more ways than one, igniting a passion neither of them can deny, despite the risks.

The Unseelie queen has other treacherous plans for Haze and Peaches. From a twisted masquerade ball, to a labyrinth filled with goblins, to a hidden prison deep underground, they must work together to survive. The only way out is to trust each other…easier said than done when all he wants to do is feast on her blood.

MY REVIEW FOR THE LABYRINTH OF FANGS AND THORNS

Normally books with a small, delicate, frightened female latching onto the largest, strongest male she finds annoys the crap out of me. THIS ONE WORKS!

Peaches had a PTSD-inducing week when she was brought forward from the past to this post-apocalyptic fantasy world. She manages to survive but she develops classic abuse-survivor symptoms. She can’t escape her present situation because she has never been able to escape before and she has “learned” to just keep the head down and survive. When the perfect chance to escape the clutches of the evil queen shows up in the form of Haze – the biggest and strongest of all the Guardians of the Well -, she timidly choses the situation she knows.

I love this story, as Peaches develops past her abuse personality. THIS CAN BE A HARD READ FOR SOME. (Trigger considerations – we don’t see much of the actual abuse, and the abuse in more fantastical in nature (blood drinking by vampires and psychic damage from magic).)

The Season of the Vampire is a very gritty part of the Fae Guardian series. I didn’t make it deep into the Werewolf trilogy, but I am really loving the Vampires. Looking forward to Feb 2022 and Shade and Silver story.

These stories are a mix of action-adventure, fantasy, and romance and delivers everything these genres represent pitch perfect.

Silver is a beautiful liar.
She’s human.
And a fierce killer of fae.

She marks her kills on a silver vambrace so everyone can see her savagery and stay away. As long as she keeps protecting downtrodden humans from monstrous fae-folk, and hiding the true reason for wearing magic-cutting silver, her loneliness is of no consequence. Selected for a high priority mission, she bravely heads into Elphyne, never expecting one of their worst waiting for her. Wanting her. Craving her.
Shade is sinfully attractive.
He’s a vampire.
And the most hard to resist of the Fae Guardians.

From the Queen’s bed to The Order, he uses the power of sex to get what he wants. Eventually they all succumb, and they all fall short of harmonizing with the darkness hidden in his soul…. until he finds the one woman who resists his every charm.
Seducing Silver will be a challenge, but it’s one he was made for.
Nothing will get in his way. Not the evil creature terrorizing Elphyne. Not the human enemy with dastardly plans of their own. Not the Unseelie Queen’s obsession with him. Not even the betrayal of the one person who can hurt him the most.
This courting of savage hearts is a symphony.
And theirs will be one for history.

MY REVIEW FOR THE SYMPHONY OF SAVAGE HEARTS

I’m not into BDSM and the central romance for Symphony are two characters who need that type of relationship, so I struggled to finish the book. The first 50% of the book centered on the relationship between the two, and, for the most part, they were the only characters for the first half of the book.

This is the standard setup for most of the series.

First, introduce the world and two romantic characters. Next, get the romantic characters to accepted their fated-mate status – hot, hot relationship actions are involved. Then, the second half of the book focused on moving the series story forward – reintroducing all the other characters of the series, explaining where things are, what the leads for this book bring to the table to shift the series plot forward, and then exciting rise and fall of action.

Loved the second half of the book – and the setup for the next trilogy of the Fae Guardians (the Elves) – makes me want to see all their romances and continue to watch as the overarching storyline continues. Will the fae queen continue her descent into madness, or is she savable? Will the fae kingdoms devolve into war and poison the Well beyond redemption? Will the human leader continue his plans? Can humans and fae come to live together?

Book Grade – great for the series, didn’t like the romance or the lead characters of this book at all.

What I would recommend – see if you like the characters. If so, follow their romance. Otherwise, if you are reading this just for the series – jump to the 50% mark and go from there.

What I didn’t like about the romantic leads: The lead characters really are villains. Selfish, wallowing in their black hearts. After power. Don’t consider more than one side to any story until forced to. People love them for no reason. They are like two black holes – taking and not giving. On the other hand, these are very real type of people. I just don’t like them or want to spend time with them, however beautiful and magical they are.

Chapter Four: A Musing

I shouldn’t ask, but I’ve lived with the memory of sending a child into a panic attack for seven years and now I find out why. Curiosity leads to many questions which are better off unasked. “Have you had sex yet Miss Singer?”

Tyla shakes her head.

“I don’t…” I close my eyes, damn seers. How to approach this. “The hands tied up and keeping you quiet are unusual actions, but not outside things I have done with consent. Do you think they may be within things you would accept with consent?”

The student gives me a timid smile. “I don’t know. What happened, what will happen, didn’t feel very consent-y for either of us.”

“Do you know where this will occur? Maybe we could avoid it? Delay the event?” I tap my desk. “You says it has to occur and we are the right sizes, but we should be these sizes for a while.”

“It’s the lecture hall.” Her whisper gets rough as she talks to her hands. “You have me tied on the podium with your necktie on the metal frame used to hold your laptop in place.”

For a second, I can see her tied up as described, my tie looped around the frame, her lips bruised as I hold my hand over her mouth and I pound into her.

Well, that is going to make using the podium difficult for a while. Can’t lecture sitting down.

“So no?”

“I really can’t drop out.” Tyla looks up at me earnestly. “The Sisters need me. They want me to finish school in three years, so I got to have this course this semester. There is no way around it.”

I rub my forehead thinking. “I can’t have you as my student.”

“I have to have this class.” She picked at her bag. “And this, that, has to, will happen.”

“Could I tutor you and have Professor Caskcut give you the tests and grade your papers?” I stand to control the leg bouncing. “Get you officially not my student.”

“And what excuse do you want, Danny?”

Her voice had changed and I look over. Her body is completely different, how it is held. Fear is gone from every limb. Left in it’s place is knowledge, heavy, infinite. Sexy, confident, lethal. Tyla’s gray eyes are white.

I gulp. A seer realized. Us mere mortal elementalists shouldn’t be rubbing elbows with the likes of them.

“What excuses do I have, Miss Singer?”

She laughs. “Well, most of the futures I’m your wife so we could be engaged, some we are just friends raising our little boy, your spouses like me, and others, well… Limited thread. But you asked for excuses, engagement for love at first sight, the administration loves that.” She tilts her head smiling, seeing something other than the here and now. “Your grandmother’s emerald engagement ring is beautiful. We could tell the administration about me having a vision but they don’t need to know what it is about. We can truthfully say it is interfering with my learning and to bring Leo in to help. My grades clearly indicate additional tutoring is needed. I may be able to encourage my Sisters to request special treatment, but they hate that. Still they will give in if you don’t like the other options. Still wife is the safest option. We tend to live the longest that way.”

“Wife?” I squeak. Not something I had ever considered, especially with a student. But the rest of it is concerting. “Safe? Live, as in other ways we die early?”

The woman in front of me smiles sadly. “War is coming, Danny. The Sisters are delaying it as long as they can. But the Union is dissolving.”

With those words, Tyla dissolves. Her head coming forward and hitting my desk, then her body slumping out the chair onto the floor.

“Fuck.” I rush around and open the door. “Taylor, call the healer.”

“What happened?” asks the teacher’s aide sending their familiar winging away. “Damn, I knew I should have reported it as soon as it happened.”

“What?” I shake my head, “Later. Help me get her out here.”

Chapter Five: A Malice

My eyes drop to Professor Hawkins tie as I enter the class for our review lecture before finals. “I thought you burned that.” I hiss quietly. It was The Tie of the vision. He had worn it two months ago and I let him know it was the One and he had immediately torn it off and stuffed it into the podium.

“Sorry, administration is visiting all the rooms today and I got ketchup on my other tie at lunch.”

“Ten-year.” I mutter, knowing he isn’t close yet, and my little issue with him isn’t helping. Him giving me his grandmother’s engagement ring, and us being officially engaged to get the other elemental Professor to fasttrack my training, had been completely unexpected and couldn’t have helped his standing with the administration either. When he gave me the ring, he said to call him Danny and I hadn’t been able to yet.

“Yeah, they like their uniform, now get up there, Singer.”

I mount the steps to the highest area. I really didn’t need to be here. Professor Caskcut had passed me with a 91% after a ton of work, scholarship in tact, but I really wanted to have the elements stick. They are the best attack magic, quick and decisive. Even if I never really master them myself, I do want to know how to defend against them best as I can.

At least Meghan isn’t ever going to be an issue for me again. After collapsing in Hawkins office, everything came out during the investigation into my injuries and she got expelled. I heard her family managed to get her into one of the European schools for next semester.

***

The review was torturous, especially with the necktie on after half a semester outside of uniform. I couldn’t believe how much of the material I needed to retouch. Was I that bad an instructor or they that bad at listening? Well, the test will tell. The room emptied slowly for the last time this semester. Students gave me first bumps and thanked me.

Brittany dropped off three gold origami cranes and Ryan dropped a smooth red stone with a charm clinging to it. I raised an eyebrow, and he said, “Heat charm, your office gets cold in the winter. Should work about a week if I did it right.”

And if he did it wrong, it could catch the office on fire. I don’t trust freshmen, especially those with the attention span that Ryan had, to get it completely right. I’ll add it to my fireplace at home. The entire living room is stone-lined and charmed to handle all but the most explosive elemental magic, a necessary in an elementalist home for when they get sick.

Tyla drifted down last. “Hey.” She said in her soft way.

“Hey.” I say back, looking for the scary defiant woman I had met for a few minutes in my office several months ago. I think I am going to look forward to watching Tyla grow into that woman. I see the firmness every now and again, the refusal to stay down no matter how many times she gets knocked down.

“You did good today.”

I blink at the compliment. “Thank you.” I smile a half-smile, smolder under control. She is still eighteen and it wouldn’t be fair, yet. I glance at the podium and her eyes follow mine.

“Some day soon.” She says to me, blushing lightly.

“We haven’t even kissed.” I whisper back, my voice dropping an octave without effort on my part. Since getting engaged, I haven’t chased anyone.

“And yet, somehow, I know exactly what you taste like.” Tyla’s shy smile changes into a small tease. “I dream of you often.”

I shake at those words. Dreams for her take on another dimension, literally. Makes me wonder how many of the dreams I had about her were shared.

“Surprise motherfuckers.” A voice screeches from the top of the lecture hall as a ball is tossed down from a fire exit.

I throw up an air shield around me and Tyla, and the ball crashes against it, releasing a pink gas. Unfortunately hardening the air to keep the gas on the other side sets off the heat charm in a blast, dispersing the gas throughout the room and sending us flying. I gasp for breath as the wind got knocked out of me.

Raising my head, I see Tyla nearby also struggling to breath. Damn woman is fine looking on her hands and knees. Rolling over, her eyes meet mine. “Oh, um, Danny…”

“Exactly.” I stand and walk over to her and pull her up, pinning her with my mouth against her lips. She might know what I taste like, but I needed to know what she tastes like.

Honey, hope, and ho.

She opens like a flower and drinks me like I’m whiskey shots. Her hands undo my tie and make quick work of my buttons. She starts working on my pants, but I’m not ready yet. She is too greedy.

I invade her space and she backs up and backs up until she hits something that doesn’t move. Seeing raise metal ridge around the edges, I grab the wayward hands and tie them up, then get busy on making sure she is ready for me.

“Good girl.” I growl, finding evidence she is more than ready. I throw the annoyances away and shove my fingers into her cunt, turning them over until I find the place that makes her legs start shaking uncontrollably. “Scream for me.”

“No, no,” she shakes her head side to side, “ten-year.”

“I don’t fucking care.”

“Must. We.” She lifts up on her tiptoes and widens her stance at the same time. “Please. Oh god.” She arches forward, her head slamming back wood. “Shh. Shh. Ah. Ah.”

Her cunt grips my fingers when I add a third. “Don’t hold back.”

She shakes her head side to side, biting her lip hard.

“Fine.” I pull my fingers out and unzip my pants, pulling out my penis. “You want this?” I rub it against her cunt.

Tyla nods vigorously. “Yes, yes, yes. Please.”

I lift her up and she wraps her legs around my back, and I glide in until I feel a barrier. Right. I should have expected that.

Keeping one hand on her ass, I lift the other to cover her mouth.

“I’m about to hurt you a little. But then it will feel real good. Bite down as hard as you want. Nod if you trust me.”

She nodded.

I felt her scream in my soul.

Chapter Six: A Misfire

It took two hours for the charm to wear off. When Meghan came by with some of her board relatives while we were still in the thick of the spell, our “depravities” on display for any coming through the doors.

Let me tell you, hair pulling is pretty awesome shit. Danny could do that all day and I wouldn’t care which hole he used.

Her relatives were shocked, shocked, they told us. How dare Professor Hawkins act that way with a student. The administration responded that while they would have preferred Mr. Hawkins hadn’t used the classroom after hours for such activities, they couldn’t find fault of his actions with his finance who he planned to marry over the winter holidays.

(We hadn’t planned it that soon, but the Sisters had, so, yeah, that happened.)

Danny got a slap on the wrist. Oh, no, he had to teach the 100 level courses again during the winter semester. Him and Caskcut usually alternate who gets stuck with them.

Meghan had been more careful with this spell and nothing could be traced back to her, at least legally. The Sisters had no problems knowing who, but free will meant some of the Seer thread powers could not be used in court.

Did Danny and me live a good long life? In many futures. In others, the war took a harsh toll on us and our children. Which one of the futures did I live in? All of them.

That is the blessing and curse of being a seer. The true singular universe exists for the normals all the way forward and back, but us seers, the shadows are lived within equally exhaustively.

Did Meghan have a good life? Not in a single one.

Chapter 1: A Menace

“And if you think for a minute I will accept a 89! A ‘B’! You are out of your mind. You will correct that grade right now professor, or I will have your job.”

At the sneer of ‘professor’, the teacher aide manning the receptionist desk in the elementist department and I made eye contact, the threads related to danger tightening between us. They dropped their eyes to the recorder in my hands, the glass globe surrounded on three sides with a rubber-like alloy to keep it from breaking then returned to grading. The screamer was Miss Meghan Torbett, a freshman like me, but unlike me, her parents, grandparents, and so forth, going back to the old world and, in some cases, olde lands, formed an unbroken line of magicians and wizards. I’m half-null and my dad walked away from the gray as soon as he was of age. I think Meghan was related to everyone on the Northern University board by blood and North America Regional Oversight Committee by at least marriage. Likely the most of the representatives in the Union of the Gray as well, but that gets tricky since the Asia Region is even more xenophobic than those in Europe and the Americas which practically worship the Pure. Not someone you want to get on their bad side.

But since I was already there, for daring to be a half-null breathing around her, I pulled out the recorder the Sisters gave me when she started threatening a teacher. Not exactly the purpose they gave it to me for, but it had more than enough memory.

We couldn’t hear Professor Hawkins rumbling response distinctly but Meghan stormed out shortly thereafter. Seeing the recorder in my hand, she sent an arch of electric at me with a quick hand snap. “Bitch, snitches get stitches.”

I barely got a one-handed shield off, to ground some of the electric into a metal side table. The majority of it hit the recorder dead-on and arched through me, slamming me into the sofa cushion. I twisted in pain.

While Torbett was a prime elementalist, if she turned her assignments in instead of shmoozing the boys for the best catch, I barely could hold my own. The only reason we both were in Professor Hawkins “The Elements of Elements” class was it was required for practically everything the University offered.

She sniffed and walked away while the rubber melted between my fingers and the darkened glass tinkled as it cracked. I huffed a few times, restarting my breathing, then peeled the recorder from my hands. The teacher aide appeared at my side with a healer’s kit, knitted to me with offers of succor.

“Oh my god, I can’t believe she …” they started opening up the kit, “are you okay? I can send a message to—”

“I’m fine. I’m fine.” I said. I’m not really fine, but I did not want to write up an incident report that no one will pay attention to. I know how the University butters it bread and a student whose family donates a ton of money and a student on a needs-based scholarship got very different treatment when reporting issues. “Is there, is there anything in there, in there for burnt, burnt hair?”

“The scent?”

“Yes, yes.” Since I could smell it clinging to me. “Also, also the brain, b-b-brain…”

“Brain scramble. Let me see,” they pawed through the box, “sage!” They lit it by brushing their fingers along the wrapped dried leaves. They waved the smoking blunt over my body, paying particular attention to my hand, hair, and head.

I could feel the healing herb work on the cognitive damage in seconds. Enough fixing of what happened for me to know I did need to go to the healing office after this instead of ignoring everything like I wanted to. I hated rocking the boat

“Thank you.” I said, tucking the damaged recorder into my zippack. The Sisters would not be happy with me when I show up tomorrow at their offices, but I think Meghan will be even less happy when she finds out my recorder isn’t a cheap version able to be shorted out by a freshman on a temper tantrum. Of course, the Sisters won’t do anything immediately; they always took the long view. But when they acted, they won. “Thank you.” I reach to stop the teacher’s aide hand, but closed my hand before we make contact. They stopped, the smoke from the tied batch still crossing to my face and head like a strong breeze blew toward me. “I appreciate the help.” I leaned closer so we are nearly touching and whispered, “but you need to stop.” I glanced my eyes to the side and their eyes followed, growing round when they noticed Meghan standing in the doorway watching us. The threads between us quivered in tension.

“You’re welcome.” They start cleaning up the debris, making a note on the outside of the kit to replace the sage. The person’s eyes firmed before they said, “Are you sure you don’t want to report this?”

Brave of them. Dangerous for us both. “It’s was just a misunderstanding.” I look directly in their brown eyes and gave a small shake of my head in warning. “Don’t worry about it.” I stood and walked to the Professor’s door and knocked on the frame. Protected from prying eyes, I mouthed a message and sent it to the elementalist behind me, relaxing as threads connecting us eased.

***

Chapter Two: A Meeting

“You asked to see me Professor Hawkins?”

I look up to see Tyla in my doorway. I snapping shut the diary where I was recording the incident with Torbett and push it aside along with my anger. “Yes, Miss Singer, please come in and shut the door, if you are comfortable with that. You can also leave it open if you prefer.”

She ducks her head, her frazzled brown hair hiding her eyes and face as she closes the door behind her and sits across from me. Pulling around the zipbag from her back, she places it on her lap between us and curls around it.

“Are you comfortable?” I ask, even though she clearly isn’t. “Would you like some water or juice?”

“No,” she shakes her head, stray hairs flying, “no, I’m fine.”

I rap my knuckles on my desk as I twist in my seat. I had thought I knew how I wanted to start this conversation, but now I had fled my mind. Only three years into teaching, just seven years her senior, the age gap and situation placed a chasm between us. Each squeak of my chair makes her smaller.

“Why are you failing my class?” I wince. That isn’t how I wanted to start. I lean forward and drop my voice from my classroom speaking range to the low rumble I use to calm down animals, children, and soon-to-be ex-girlfriends. “Every other class you are taking is 95% or higher. The administration is worried about your scholarship if we can’t raise your grade.”

“Well,” she kept her head down, fingers plucking at the strings on her bag. The fingers were marred with a black material and looked blistered. “I’m not that good at elemental magic.”

“And I would understand if the course included practical labs, but it’s lecture and research and you excel at that, at least according to Professors Hirt and Vedder.”

Her voice dropped into a rough whisper. “You talked to Professor Vedder about me?”

“I talked to all your instructors as well as your advisor.” I try to will her to look up, but she doesn’t. “Everyone is worried.” I turn in the seat, my leg beginning to bounce. I place a hand on it to keep it down. “So worried, they asked me to speak to you personally. They figured since we went to the same Preparation System, we may be able to work something out.”

I wait to see if she reacts to that particular factoid, because it had been news to me. We were close enough in age she would have been in the school at the same time as me, though fifth graders and twelfth graders rarely crossed paths. Imagine my surprise when I realize we had, rather spectacularly, and it would have stuck with her even stronger than it had with me. I just hadn’t learned the name of the kid I had sent into a panic attack during the Testing Ceremony so didn’t know the student who sat as far from me as possible in the largest lecture hall the school had to offer was the little girl who had screamed, “Don’t touch me, don’t touch me. Stop hurting me.” when I had touched her elbow to help her up the stairs onto the testing stage. The, then, much blonder Tyla had curled up into a ball and it had taken three teachers to get her to safety. As a senior helper, no one thought to treat me for related trauma. No one ever explained what exactly had happened, but I would lay money on either past-life resurfacing, my few mediations along that line indicated I rarely was a nice person, or a future action, I was still, admittedly, quite an asshole though so far I never hurt anyone deliberately. Either conclusion meant Tyla was a seer of some sort.

“Oh.” She looks up through her flyaway hair, pushing a corner of it back so I see her dark gray eyes. “Oh.” Tyla sits up a little straighter.

I raise an eyebrow and give her my best half smile, minus the smolder I would give someone who wasn’t my student. “Oh?”

“You found out.”

“I found out?” I lift my hand from my leg and let it bounce, placing both hands in front of me. “What have I found out?”

“About, you know.” Her eyes drift to the side, a slight flush rises in her cheeks.

“Maybe.” I say, with concern, “but I need to know for certain.” I spread my hands, “And how it is affecting you in class.”

Her eyes closed. Pain twists her features a moment, before she clears her throat and faces me.

“I…”

“Go on. I’m listening.”

“I … when I … my grandma turned me in.”

“Your grandma?”

“That isn’t the place to start is it, but it is.” She cleared her throat again. “That is where the thread is tied.” Tyla did a big inhale and exhale. “I’ll start there.”

Chapter Three: A Memory

“When I was ten, I visited my grandma and she tested me.” I say.

Professor Hawkins replied in his deep, panty dropping voice. Thank all the blankets he doesn’t use that voice in class. “Why would she need to do that?”

“My dad fell in love with a null and left the Union, but the requirement was all his children would need to be tested when they got close to Emergence.” I shrugged, “I am the oldest and got tested first. The rock floated.”

The rock test is the simplest of all tests. In the positive energy hand, for most people the right hand, small amount of energy leaks unless you have learned to shield. Place a daphir rock in the positive energy hand, it will float. Not high, but noticeable if you know what you are looking for. In the negative energy hand, where energy gets absorbed, it will stick.

The Testing Ceremony in the Prep schools sorted students by gifts and skills and required trained administrators. The rock test, anyone can do.

“So grandma and grandpa slugged it out with dad who just wanted me to be normal, but they got custody and they, of course, dropped me off at the school because they are complete Purists and hate me being half-null.” I pick at my zipbag, the blisters on my right hand are getting larger. “Since it took so long to get custody in courts, I got dropped off with no explanation or idea. I watched the introduction video, watched the pures takes their tests, which was absolutely eye opening for someone who only had seen a rock float like a magnet hovering over a magnet.”

Professor Hawkins raised his eyebrows at that.

Oops. Most people the rock in hand barely hovers high enough for a piece of paper to slip through. For it to hover like two magnets requires serious power.

“You understand, that is just what it seemed like to a ten-year-old.”

He nodded.

“Anyway, it came my turn to go down and you touched my elbow.”

“And you had been primed for magic ever since the rock test.” The professor growled.

I shivered in response. “Yeah, they don’t say once you start emerging, the power just grows. I’m an introvert, so while I did hug my parent goodbye and all that, I pretty much stuck with myself until walking into the room and …”

“I touched your elbow and you saw something.”

I nod small, chin against my chest. Please don’t make me tell you.

There is no way he won’t make me tell him. Put your big girl panties on.

“I was bigger and so were you, but you are over me, pressing hard against me. It felt … all the felts.” I blush badly. “At ten, I had no clue what those feels were and it was traumatic. You are holding your hand over my mouth to keep me quiet and I am biting it hard enough to taste blood. I want to scream so bad and you aren’t letting me. My hands are tied over my head.”

Professor Hawkins leaned back in his chair, pushing away from his desk, from me. “I would never.”

“You will.” I shake my head. “And soon. It was a clear vision, no cloudy. Somehow, someway it will happen in all the timelines you and I exist in. At least I’m eighteen as of last week, I was worried it would happen before then since I recognized you and I are the right sizes for that … that… . Well, the first day I walked into class and saw you.”

BOOK BLURB ON AMAZON for IMMORTAL OPS

Immortal Ops Team Captain Lukian Vlakhusha is having issues with his newest target, Peren Matthews. His higher-ups want her eliminated. He simply wants her. The alpha side of him demands he claim her–that is, if she’ll have him. After all, he’s what she fears most–a wolf shifter. But there is more to Peren than even she’s aware of and the enemy is closer than anyone imagined.

MY REVIEW for IMMORTAL OPS (of the New & Lengthened 2016 Version)
King of the American Lycans, as old as dirt, and sent with his team of shapeshifters to take out a target with extreme prejudice, Lukian has one problem and killing things ain’t it. The target is his soulmate.

Part of Ms. Roth’s complicated Immortal Series World, the book is her normal solid. Humorous interaction between strong alpha military males, and between the strong close-knit friendship group of women who love them. Insta-love of soulmates WITH challenges of figuring out how the relationship between individuals should work, because just because fate demands it, doesn’t mean human free will goes out the window.

A lot is happening in this book as it is the first of a series and needs to introduce a lot of characters.

BOOK BLURB ON AMAZON for CRITICAL INTELLIGENCE

When loyalties are questioned, the Immortal Ops find themselves fighting a war to guard not only their secrets but their lives as well.

Roi Majors, wolf-shifter and second in command of the I-Ops, is having a hard time believing that Intel can only get half the information needed to bring down an underground ring of vampires with big-spending backers who are hell-bent on creating a race of supernaturals with multiple strands of DNA in them. When he finds himself paired with the one woman in the world who seems immune to his self-proclaimed charms, he can’t wait to see her to safety and then bid her good riddance. He never counted on falling in love with her. And he sure in the hell never counted on her claiming to be an agent with a branch of the government no human should know about.

MY REVIEW for CRITICAL INTELLIGENCE (of the New & Lengthened 2016 Version)

Roi is your typical maxed out Lycan Alpha, second to the king of the American Lycans on an elite military force. And I mean Alpha Male to nearly testosterone toxicity – he pushes every limit he can, bucking authority. He is the type to flip a tank while driving just to see if he could – and everyone around him would be laughing and placing bets, while he walks off with a girl on each arm afterwards.

Then he meets his match in a little 5 foot three-ish system analyst. The woman who constantly berates him. Asks if he thinks before acting. And calls him all kinds of unflattering things, with a half-smile and a wink.

The answer is he does think, but not with the big head. But right now the big head and the little head were in agreement that this woman is one of the most frustrating in the world.

A fun romp with all the troupes of the genre brought out and played with in the loving hands of Ms. Roth. A great read.

BOOK BLURB ON AMAZON for RADAR DECEPTION

Dr. Thaddeus Green survived a werepanther attack long ago, leaving him immortal and a member of the I-Ops team. He’s dedicated his life to genetics and to serving his country. After his mutated DNA led to the death of his loved one, he vowed to never let anyone close to his heart again. Try as he might, Green is unable to stop the mystical pull to the tall, leggy blonde with a sharp tongue and an even worse bite. Thinking Melanie is suffering from mating withdrawal, Green is prepared to do what he must to assure her survival, even if it means claiming her for himself, regardless of his need to protect his heart. Little does Green know that fate has been preparing him for Melanie Daly all his unnaturally long life.

When ghosts from the past resurface, in ways he never dreamt possible, the normally mild-mannered scientist finds himself drawing on his inner beast and rage to assure his mate and their future are protected. But even Green can’t fight all of Melanie’s battles for her. Some she has no choice but to face on her own. Can their bond stand the test of time?

MY REVIEW for RADAR DECEPTION (of the New & Lengthened 2016 Version)

I’ve been hoping for Green to get his day and damsel. What can I say? I love strong and brainy with a touch of tragic. I wasn’t sure about him hooking up with the bubbly playgirl Melanie, but the book delivers on all fronts for brainy, strong, and a touch of tragic.

BOOK BLURB ON AMAZON for STRATEGIC VULNERABILITY

Held in a remote testing facility in the middle of the Brazilian rain forest, shape-shifter and alpha male Wilson Rousseau has long since given up hope of being rescued. Days blend together until he can’t help but long for death. Saved from his isolated hell by a female’s distress call, he feels an instant connection to her.

When she finds her path connecting with Wilson, a man who would give his life to save hers, there is an instant attraction. But dark secrets may change their lives forever. Can they find a way to beat the odds and be together, or will the madman win?

MY REVIEW for STRATEGIC VULNERABILITY (of the New & Lengthened 2016 Version)

Wil keeps getting the short-end of the stick, all the while riding the sharp end of the spear. First he volunteers for his military duty, signing up to become super solider shifter. Lab mixup means he becomes a wererat. Everyone else on his team is cool things like werewolves and weretigers.

Now he has been captured. His captors hate him and shoot him daily, forcing him to use his low reserves to regenerated again and again. And that doesn’t count the drugging and torture.

Upside he found his soulmate. Who is also captured. And pregnant.

The book is at its best when the two of them are together against all odds.

Book Review: Shifter Mate Magic

Shifter Mate Magic by Carol Van Natta

BOOK BLURB ON AMAZON

Pregnant Jackie Breton just escaped from a corrupt feline pack intent on selling her half-shifter baby to the highest bidder. She’s smart, independent, and has a desperate plan to keep her baby safe: Get away from the pride as fast and far as possible.

Trevor Hammond, prehistoric bear shifter, has been rejected by everyone in his life for… being born, basically. Well, except for the beloved aunt who raised him. He’s built a career as an independent trucker, but life would be much better with someone he can hold in his arms and claim as his own.

When Jackie meets Trevor at a truck stop, his bear demands he help her. His aunt even calls with a dire warning: Get Jackie to the magical sanctuary town in Wyoming before she’s killed.

Jackie thinks he’s sexy as hell, but too good to be true. She doesn’t trust shifters. With the feline pride hot on her trail, however, Trevor and the quirky town of Kotoyeesinay might be her only chance for survival. Even Trevor’s indomitable bear may be no match for the dangerous enemy seeking retribution.

MY REVIEW

First in series, so the special marketing price to pick it up. Not that I need much incentive to get a Carol Van Natta book, having read her science fiction romance thriller/mystery/police procedurals. The woman can write, her characters are intelligent, and diversity among her character – even the romantic leads – is common.

This book delivers on everything I have come to expect based on the other series I read by her.

One down side, it is short and there is some jumps that are abrupt. Usually related to when the romantic couple needs to be apart – since the story is about their relationship, what they do individually when they are apart for a week isn’t addressed. A quick gloss of “she got to know the town” and “he missed her”.

But again, this is when the couple is apart – so I understand the choice to focus on the relationship when they are together. Still, I think the book would have been better showing their development separately as well as together. Living with a void can be equally telling as living with a person.

The paranormal romance with shifters and magic users, elves, sanctuary, monsters, and dragons comes with a rich world all set to be developed throughout the Ice Age Shifter series. Great fun by a very good writer.

Addition – Meant to talk about what a WONDERFUL Alpha Trevor is. Recently I’ve been getting tired with shifter stories because the Alphas so often run right over the females. The insta-love of “fated mates” means the guy can pretty much do whatever he likes and the woman will do doe-eyes. Not here. I mean Trevor could – they are fated mates. But he stops himself every time his protective instinct would have him tossing her behind him and growling at the world. He lets her face her battles, protecting her back. He stops his instincts from overriding her emotional needs. Yet you never doubt if she needed him, he would be there, because he is. But he is there for the slow parts as well as the danger – the cuddles alongside the fights. I might actually start reading shifter romances again, or at least Ms. Van Natta’s.
