Zounds, is one third of 2026 gone already??? Time to do a check-in on my writing goals for the year I mentioned on January 1st. (Next check in will be at the end of August before the year-end crazy starts in September with two writing conventions.)

How is the “Butt in Chair, Hands on Keyboard” (BICHOK) going? Not well, not well. But I haven’t been completely unsuccessful. Slowing me down is day job was unexpectedly successful in January and February, netting me several paying editing gigs. Income is nice.

Now onto the writing goals from January.

One) Reading Goals (A) 24 BIPoC reads  – I’m at 10 reads. Yes 8 of them are children’s books, but they are non-fiction children books about BIPoC people written by BIPoC authors. And I am on schedule. The two BIPoC adult books are The Formidable Miss Cassidy and The Mystical Mister Kay by Meihan Boey. Think Mary Poppins set in Singapore with the kids aged up to teenagers – historical urban fantasy folklore. (B) Book Clubs – Still attending my book clubs faithfully. (C) 12 books for bookcrafting tracked through Storygraph – Nothing done here yet. (D) Bonus Goal: 6 “Likely Reads Book Reviews” for the local NPR station – Not done yet, sigh. I so want to help support NPR especially after my station lost nearly two-thirds of its support (government removal of NPR, and the university also getting government cuts so they cannot support their extra education missions). Maybe during the summer, as it is the slowest season in Texas because of the heat.

**Reading Goals are mostly on track for the year!

Two) Writing Goals (A) writing at least one blog per day – ha, ha, ha, ha. Yeah, right. But I am doing good catchup, having completely finished the 2022 flashes finally meaning I am only behind for 2024, 2025, and 2026 – just over 100 to go; (B) writing at least one short story a month – nope; and (C) writing at least 500 real words per day – again nope.

**Writing Goals aren’t out of reach, but I need to get cracking on them.

Three) Submission Goals – I cannot control if a book or short story will be published, BUT if I don’t finish and submit, it won’t happen. (A) I need to submit the followup short story for my superhero story which appeared in “A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To P-Con” for the 2026 anthology. – I DID NOT MAKE THE DEADLINE – UGH!(B) I would like to submit to two of the Ranconteur anthologies. – NOT YET (C) I would like to publish another 20k (at least) book; Honestly” is getting lonely out there. – Not yet, but it is going into summer, so more free time.  (D)Bonus points, get a novella or short novel published by Falstaff’s Crush line.  – also a nope.

**Submission Goals are getting into the impossible area. If I am going to do it, I will need to do them during the Summer.

Four) Social Media Goals (A) daily TikTok bookquotes (or embroidery drops); – I met this goal until TT decided to do the AI nightmare and I have finally quit this beloved tradition. (B) transferring bookquotes to YouTube – this was done; (C) making memes (at least 50 this year) – 39 new memes made so far! (D) maintaining this blog; – I’ve been late with a couple drops in 2026, but so far only actually missing one post out of 52. (E) (the likely books review mentioned under reading) – not tackled yet (F) Bonus point: start a substack. – highly likely to be started in the summer now that TikTok has lost me.

**Social Media Goals – I might actually accomplish all of these. Doing great so far.

Five) Socialization Goals (A) two book clubs (B) writer group (C) an embroidery group. – I have found a writer’s group!!! So I now have four social groups outside the house which is essential when you work from home. This is part of the writing strategy because even though I am a real introvert, I am still human and need to feed the social animal side of me. The enclosure needs to be enriched.

**Doing amazingly well with the Socialization Goals, something that was an issue last year.

Six) Three Conventions as a Goal – Went to FenCon in February. Just two more writing conventions to go!

**Convention Goals are on schedule.

Seven) Bonus Publication Goal – Publish a novel – Not done yet.

**Bonus goal – I’ve never published a novel (I do have a novella out – Honestly by Erin Penn.)

Other questions include do I want to participate in the A-to-Z in April or do Novel November? – I did participate in the A-to-Z this year and I think it is my best participation ever. The Novel November question has been pushed off to the final-third of the year me. Next revisit is end of August, as previously mentioned.

Overall, nowhere near I want to be, but some of my goals are on schedule or even ahead of schedule. Summer is the slow season for me for duties and responsibilities outside of writing, so I hope I can focus on the writing. We shall see. Next check in for 2026 is the end of August when the final third of the year starts – conventions, Novel November, and family December.

Zounds, a question for you: What have you accomplished during the first third of the year and what do you want to accomplish over the summer?

Geeking Science: O is for Otzi the Iceman

An updated picture of Ötzi, alongside the previous reconstruction. Image: © Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (Bridge)

O is for Ötzi and the subject of today’s Geeking Science. One of the best aspects of science is revisiting old knowledge with new skills and techniques to get a better image.

Our first view of Ötzi was in 1991 when German hikers discovered him in the Italian Alps.

(Ötzi, while still frozen in the glacier, photographed by Helmut Simon upon the discovery of the body in September 1991 – Fair use,

Extraction from the melting glacier included clothing (made from leather and hide) and hunting tools (axe, flint knife, and longbow). (Bridge)  And was done … poorly. Initially, the approach was to remove a cadaver of some poor mountaineer who had the bad luck to die in the past decade on the glacier. Ice axes and a pneumatic drill got the body out of the ice, breaking the longbow among other archeological nightmares. (Wikipedia)

The first change of status happened when Konrad Spindler dated the body based on the copper axe to be “at least four thousand years old” a couple weeks later. (Wikipedia)

Later carbon dating from tissue samples of the corpse and carbon-based items found with him place it at 5,000 years. Further studies give a 2 out of 3 chance of death between 3239 and 3105 BC. (That is a 134 year window.) (Wikipedia) Each dive into Ötzi’s body, with better techniques and tools, gives better information. From eyeballing a body by untrained hikers to carbon dating a 150 year window about five thousand years ago.

This is true about nearly every discovery associated with Ötzi. From white hairy hunter-gatherer man who fell into a glacier, to the present view of a balding man of agricultural descent (though presently a hunter), with tattooed dark skin (about the shade of the Mediterranean), who got ambushed, but escaped to run home until he died on his journey back.

In 2001, an “X-ray examination revealed an arrowhead lodged in his left shoulder, suggesting that he likely bled to death”. (StudyFinds 2023)

Fig 1. Overview on the Iceman’s Health Problems – unknown source for picture as the connecting website is gone

While it looks like Ötzi had a bad life, he died in his mid to late forties. By mid-forties most modern people, even without an active lifestyle such as hunting, have back pain, bad knees and hips, some stomach problems, a couple of cavities, and likely a head injury of some sort – from dodgeball as a kid. The healed rib fractures is interesting; he lived long enough to recover from broken ribs. I wondered who helped him.

In 2003, Nerlich et.al. took a scraping where previous examinations showed a possible deep stab wound. They weren’t sure if it was an injury from life or an insult to the body from being tossed around by a glacier and then being extracted from the glacier with ice axes and a drill. They rehydrated the tissue sample and the results show blood clotting (like a scab) progressed between three to eight days after the injury.

I wonder if a similar study has been done on the arrow head injury. We know there is a hole there, but how long was it there. These two injuries together paint quite a picture and very different from some hunter randomly falling to his death in a glacier five thousand years ago.

The writer in me want to know. Did he and a hunting partner get in a disagreement and Ötzi got stabbed in the hand and shot with an arrow while he escaped? Maybe a group of invaders had captured him and the arrow shot happened when he grabbed a moment to run away, after playing up his trick knee and bad back with the wily actions of an man who had aged long enough to need to live by his brains instead of just his brawn. Maybe he was the invader into other people’s territories who hunted him down for his trespass, an old man scent to test their security.

The more his body reveals to us, the more questions open up.

In 2009, a CAT scan combined with DNA analysis gave us his last meals included ibex game meat, goat domesticated meat, wheat (likely bread), roots, and fruits. He was found with provisions such as barley, einkorn wheat bran, and flax and poppy seeds. (Wikipedia)

In 2012, the first DNA genome pass was done. The DNA samples used were highly contaminated. From them, and a cultural bias toward white people in cold climates,  drawings and presentations show Ötzi to be white skinned and hairy. The dark skin of the mummy corpse was attributed to the mummification process (never mind that most mummies studies are of Egyptians and … wait for it … people of non-“white” skin). (Hesman Saey)

Genes giving lighter skin tones didn’t drift in to humanity until nearly a thousand or two thousand years later. Humans started in Africa; and European-descent people tend to attribute light-skin happening MUCH MUCH later into the “distant” past than it did.

It happened “recently” on the genetic scale. Like the Egyptian Empire setting up along the Nile recent. Like after China had silk for over a thousand years already, recent. Like bricks and city states had existed for a millennium, recent.

Civilization, cities, textiles, writing, and history all pre-date “white” skin. Europe didn’t create the building blocks of humanity.

In 2015, using special photographic techniques, suspected tattoos, which had been hard to see against the mummified skin, revealed 61 tattoos. (Wikipedia)

In 2023, a new DNA study on Ötzi genome revealed much of what we know now. Part of it is better techniques for clearing up contamination. Part of it is a broader base of genetic knowlege indicating human migration. The Human Genome Project started in 1990 and, thanks to massive increases in computer calculating powers, completed in 2003 (with some outliers finally solved in 2022). (Wikipedia HGP) Techniques, knowledge, and calculation powers had improved by several multiples.

New information indicated his ancestors were likely Anatolian farmers (StudyFinds 2023) rather than hunter-gatherers. The dark skin of the mummy likely matched the skin color Ötzi had in life. Instead of flying grey hair in his forties, he was much more likely going bald. He had the DNA for type 2 diabetes, but his diet protected him from the genetic predisposition.

You got to Geek Science when it revisits and retests and reassesses what is known. The past lifting knowledge up, the present reviewing and improving, and the future built on a more accurate view of how the world works and where humanity came from.

Blog: Two Pieces of News

From the A to Z Challenge Website

I’ve decided to participate in the A-to-Z Challenge again this year. I am WAY behind on creating materials, so everything is going to be rushed. Nothing inspires quite like Panic. Hopefully at least some of it will be an actual story.

Second piece of news, NaNoWritMo – the non-profit, has failed. They are working on closing their doors in an orderly fashion, giving time for people to download any materials from there. The problem that ended the non-profit wasn’t the child-issues or the AI-backlash, but the loan they took out during COVID because of ongoing shortfalls of donations and other income vs. some very, very reasonable expenses. They just didn’t get the donations they needed for years and years.

I know a million dollar operating budget sounds like a lot, but maintaining even my small website is over a hundred a year and I am not maintaining it for over 100,000 people to talk on and interact with, nor do I have a staff to direct over 800 volunteers. The non-profit had twelve paid staff members – even at minimum wage of $7.25 with some benefits – that would be $300,000 – playing the more reasonable minimum living wage of just $15 an hour (with minor beneifts) ups that to $550k. A professional wage of $22 per hour (or about $44k a year) for 12 people plus benefits is $875k. Why do they need twelve people: (1) volunteer wrangler, (2) weekly newsletter, (3) collecting authors and speakers, (4) bookkeeper, (5) HR, (6) administrative assistant to the board to meet non-profit ruling, (7) website administrator, (8) youth services coordinator / (9) teacher material coordinator, (10) social media person specific for the non-profit – for youtube, tiktok, facebook, etc, (11) grant writer / sponsorship seeker, (12) merchandise seller / coordinator, (13) and so much more.

Rest in peace non-profit. May the reason you started live long and prosper for everyone.
I was one of those who received the weekly newsletter. It included a link to the youtube announcement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR6NnjgeIIY
One thing which made me thoughtful was the financial issues and the emphasis of the financial shortcomings. This struck me hard as my local NPR station has a 20% income shortfall as it loses grants due too federal cuts; as Sesame Street is on the arts chopping block at the federal level, etc. Wikipedia is another mostly volunteer organization trying not to be owned by corporate groups. Donate and support where you can – but there is going to be a big shrinkage in nonprofits just as we are in need of social-support systems other than the government.
